I've got all the hardware required to fix this now—all genuine. Here are all the part numbers:

Exhaust Pipe Gasket – 9091706076
Exhaust Pipe Gasket (need 2) - 9091706065
Exhaust flange nuts – 9017910070

also, here's a diagram of the exhaust for my Aussie FZJ80

Before you start this project you might want to order up one or two of the exhaust pipe rubber cushions P/N 17567-17010, When i just took my exhaust system apart after 30 years of use one of my rubber exhaust cushions was broken in two pieces, and another one was about to break in two, If nothing else I'd take a close look at those rubber cushions to make sure they are still in good shape, These rubber cushions are shown in items 2, 3, and 4 in your above parts drawing,

update.. the exhaust shop guy reckons it's not leaking, and that I'm opening a can of worms trying to get the rusted nuts off, as there's a good chance an exhaust manifold stud could snap trying. He reckons when he ran it up onto the hoist he couldnt hear a leak, and put his hand over the rear muffler and it builds good pressure and fast. "I've been doing this a long time, and I'm telling you it's not leaking"... hard to know if he just didnt want to touch the rusty nuts. He said it doesnt matter if the flanges are flush or not, and that it's the thick metal ring gasket that makes the seal as the ends of the pipes protrude out a bit. His advice is to leave it alone. Not sure what to do now. Maybe get a second opinion? My cousin who does custom fabrication work for a high performance workshop agrees with him.

So two exhaust professionals have evaluated the situation and gave you the same advice, yet you are asking here from random strangers, who haven't ever seen your exhaust, for different opinions?

bingo!

In all seriousness though, neither is invested in whether it is or isn't. I just find it hard to believe with the size of the gap compared to the left hand side that this isn't leaking..

I hear you though, and I'm the first to admit that I'm neurotic as fk.. :frown:

Trust in yourself. Start the engine making sure it is in park, wheels chocked, etc for safety. Use your bare hands to feel around the area - not touching hot exhaust parts - you will feel puffs of air (exhaust) if there is a leak. You can also use a mechanic's stethoscope or even a length of vinyl tubing to listen for the sounds of air leaks. If you don't find anything, don't stress about it.

Soapy water works extremely well also, dawn dish soap in a squirt bottle will reveal leaks quickly. Usually you can feel them bare handed also. You can also buy new studs for fairly cheap, they tend to come out with the nut if they are fused together.

I will do the soapy water trick tomorrow or later today once it cools down. I've got a length of clear tubing I can use as a stethoscope. Might even get my neighbour to give it a little rev while doing it.

If it's not broke, don't fix it. It's never good to open Pandora's box if you don't have to. Just my opinion. :)

definitely leaking. Interestingly enough, no bubbles from the right side one with the larger gap.

looks like dad had these ready to go, I found them today, as I'd put them aside knowing they were likely for the cruiser. I don't think they're genuine ones, but they'll do! All 3 need to be replaced, they're all cactus. Thanks for this!
