Got a call at midnight that a buddy needed a tug...
Got there and went to pull him out and HIS strap broke (had a hook on his end that I didn't see, loop on my end) and hit my tailgate. Nice dent in it now and my driver side mud flap got raped. Do most of you remove them? I like them because I really don't off road very much other than snow and stuff like that. Think the dent could be knocked back out?

Hooks blow. Leave the dent as a reminder about safe recovery practices. The commens mean straps with hooks can kill you. Use ones with loops on either end and use d-rings to attach to points on the vehicle that are suitable for recovery.
 
Leave the dent. It adds character and use the experience as a lesson or excuse to purchase proper recovery gear and learn safe recovery techniques. I've had a chain break that could've killed someone. I still have a couple big chains but rarely use them and when I do I'm extra careful. A dent can be fixed but it couldve been alot worse.
 
My dad had an excursion with the V10 and got stuck. Strap with metal hooks wound up popping through the fibreglass back door and entering the interior. I can't imagine what would've happened if it shot through the window.
 
To all the posts about buying proper recovery gear;

I have all proper stuff. No hooks, nothing like that. I have straps and shackles that have never let me down. But he wanted to use his strap out of fear of me pulling the front end of his little xterra off.

my end of the strap had a loop, so i thought nothing of it. it was dark and i stayed inside the 100...but his end had a hook that i only noticed as it hit the back of my cruiser...

but oh well, id like to get it banged out if at all possible.
 
You're lucky. Recovery everything is serious business. Sorry but there's no room for assumptions...
 
Now you know why and have a story to back it to use your own gear if someone wants to connect to your truck.

You could see if someone is selling a used silver tailgate, and just swap it out. probably less cost than trying to repair this one.

I had a friends trailer pop off my truck and smash in the lower tailgate, that wasn't fun. I didn't double check everything was secure since it was night in the middle of a snowstorm in January. Now I make sure everything is secure when hooking up anything to the back. There's actually still a mark that didn't get fixed when I got the dent pulled, nor when I got the truck repainted. Totally didn't notice it till I got it bedlined and obviously no flattening it now. So it still reminds me, 8 years later.

It's not a debate, just a lesson learned I guess. I can't make the guy write me a check, no need for all that. I'll just remember next time when someone calls and asks for a tug to tell them to call someone else.

Naw, not at all. Go help 'em, just make sure YOU'RE comfortable with the whole setup before hitting the skinny pedal. That's the lesson. A better shot of the dent would help too. I'm not big on spending for minor stuff, as it's gonna happen again if you wheel the truck, but if it's significantly worst than it appears in the pic, then maybe get a quote, otherwise, I'd leave it. But my truck also has scratches, dings, flakes, etc. and I'm not worried about re-sale...

Be glad it didn't go through the window. That close to the edge it would be difficult to pop out, espcially with the crease in the dent at the bottom. You could try the air in a can/heat trick, google for a vid.
 
Dent: That's about as tough a spot to work on as there is on a 100. The access is tough - to go in (for a Dent Wizard) from the bottom or side, they'd have to open the gate... and it folds down. So, the gate would likely have to be taken off the truck to work on by a Dent Wizard... or left in place for a body shop... and that'd suck, e.g. body work, paint, etc.

I call it personal responsibility of your buddy... He called, you helped. The dent would not exist if it were not for him.

If you lent him your cruiser and he backed into a pole, dented a fender and returned it to you would you just let your insurance pay for it? I doubt it. I think you would ask him for his insurance or to pay.

If I borrow something or use the services of a friend I assume liability and take responsibility. If you were pulling me out of a ditch and strap damaged your rig the words out of my mouth would be "Thank you so much for coming to help. Let me know the repair cost and I'll write you a check". That's the right thing to do.

I know we all want to be friends and do the nice thing but if he doesn't offer to pay (whether you ask or not) he's a selfish a-hole.

You're probably too nice a guy. I suspect you will help someone else. :)
