Hi all,
I have a stock 83 FJ60, bought a year ago from a guy who rebuilt everything, new paint/interior, with a 5 speed, no receipts though. It is starting to blow a lot of blue smoke at start up and even when I sit at idle a while and then take off. I realize this is oil, and have always heard it is the rings letting oil through allowing it to burn. Would a valve adjustment help this at all? Thanks for any advice.

maybe replace the valve seals?

I dont believe that a valve adj will help. It is oil seeping down the cylinder walls. You can try an additive like lucas oil treatment but you will most likely have to have the rings replace and possibly the lower end rebuilt.

Don't have my engine manual here but I don't ever remember seeing valve stem seals. If not, it's worn guides that cause blue smoke on startup.

#5?

+1 on the valve stem seals.
it is possible to replace them without removing the head from the block.
do two comp checks one wet one dry. that will give you an idea of what your rings are doing.

yes, #5 is the seal. they're just little felt things.
i've got a bag of them in the glove box in the 40, waiting to move forward another foot or two.

Valve seals gets my vote. Typical symptoms are smoke on start up. They can be done without removing the head but it's kind of a pain. You can used compressed air to hold the valve in place, or use the rope trick. Rope trick: remove spark plug get a small dia. nylon rope and stuff it in the spark plug hole. Rotate the engine to compression and the valve is then supported. remove vavle spring, replace seal, replace valve spring, the do it 11 more times (two valves x 6 cyls.). like I siad kind of a pain, but it works.
