It is always fun having a 35 tread blow on the HWY...argh, popped the flare off and end cap for running board bent out. Have to figure out the flare but at least no didn’t lose it on the 10. Well guess it’s time for new tires where have most of you gone in the area. I’m out in the far west side so not sure for out hear but willing to drive a little bit. Also I have read the tire posts, but what tires are you all running in AZ since not a lot of exposure to snow and rain. Not a daily driver but don‘t think I need crazy aggressive more trails.

Sorry to hear about your misfortunes but glad everyone is safe. What size are you running? I am running KO2 on my 80 and am actually looking to replace them, last measured at 14/32 if I remember right. But I love my KO2.

I was running BFG MT TA 35x12.5x17, these were on when I bought it and they look like they were not that great as don’t think they all had the same life.

I'd sell you my tires but you would have to downsize as I am running 315/75-16 on the stock factory wheels and have a 5th full size spare

As far as where to go, I've used Discount Tire on all my vehicles for the past 20 years. Fair pricing, locations everywhere, and I take full advantage of their lifetime rotate and balance.

Plus the certs are worth every penny, IMO

So went to discount tires. The rims on my truck are 4 runner rims and they are 17x7, so they won’t put 35x12.5x17 tires on there even though that’s what is on there now. Said rims have to be 17 x7.5. Wanted me to put 33 on instead...

I dont know why anyone goes to DT anymore. Seriously. I asked about 35 1250 15s and was told "we don't do 15" tires anymore"

I'm exclusively about Big O now.

Any thoughts from all the 80 owners, don’t really want to buy rims just to put 35 on. Going down to 33 makes me think I would regret it later. I figure if I can find the tires and just go to a tire shop in PHX to get them put on but is it that wrong for 35x12.5x17 going on a 17x7 rim?

Many tire shops will not install a tire on a rim narrower than what is specified by the manufacturer or Tire and Rim Association. A wide tire on a narrow rim can cause squishy handling and impacts the shape of the sidewall and contact patch. You can get away with it, but it's not ideal.

Below image is an exaggerated example of a bike tire in a corner, but it illustrates how rim width impacts tire shape.

The DT in Tempe on Southern installed some wide meaty bois on my narrow factory wheels without batting an eye.

The standards vary by manufacturer too. BFG might say their 12.5 can fit on a 7.5” wheel and Cooper might say that their 12.5 can fit on an 8” wheel. Discount just wants to keep those pesky lawsuits to a minimum, so they follow the manufacturers approved width.
Going down to a 33 will actually make the sidewall angle worse unless you are going with a narrower tire too.

I had an ordeal with discount years ago over this. I bought a set of 285/75/16 cooper atp's (which suck by the way) from them for my chevy 2500. The stock wheels were 7" wide and I went to the discount tire that gave me the best price. Next time I went to have them balanced the closest discount to my house told me they wouldn't touch the truck, that it was illegal to mount the tires on the factory wheels and that there was no way discount tire did it - the manager suggested I had someone else mount them and was tying to scam a free balance. They ended up refunding my money for the mount and balance, then I took them to the next closest location and got them balanced without issue.

Every discount tire you go to is completely different. some wont honor certs if the tire "looks like it was used offroad" and some don't care. I haven't had certs for about 7 years now, the last few times I had them priced out for 35" and 37" tires, the certs were 1.5x the cost of a new tire. Its cheaper just to buy a new tire if you need one in the 3 year period.

our go-to tire place for at least the last 8 years now has been 4-Wheel Parts on all our wheeling rigs - can't beat their warranty - 3 of the trucks are on 80-series wheels with 315s, the Blazer has 37s

And their road hazard does cover off roading as well, it is in print where Discount you have to ask about coverage for off-roading.

I recently purchased some Toyo AT2s from Westcott Designs for my Tundra. They were take offs and I got them for a great price. They have connections to Discount Tire so a simple phone call to someone at the corporate office and I was able to buy the certificates over the phone.

we mostly deal with Bobby in the Mesa store - never had a problem with getting a tire completely warrantied - and we are talking at least some 5-6 tires over the years
