Looking to blast a set of 60 wheels to have powder coated black to put on my 40.

Have a few questions:

Are 60 wheels backspaced any differently than 79-40 OEM spoke wheels?

Is it possible to blast chrome wheels without damaging them? Don't want ugly, pitted surface telegraphing through the powder coat if they don't do well with blasting.

Thanks

Thanks guys. Since backspacing is different, will they still fit on a 40 with 33x10.50's? My current 40 is a '76.

Sorry...read the question wrong. Backspacing is the same...

Cool, thanks. Anyone know of anyone in Houston that could acid dip the wheels? I will check with the powdercoater too as they may know of one.

Check with the chrome shop about "dechroming".

Yikes! Just talked to the chrome shop and they quoted $85-$115 each to acid dip the wheels. I realize life in the big city can be more expensive, but holy crap, I like Wade's $25 quote better!

I sand blasted a set of Bullet Hole wheels back in the 90's but used fine grit sand. Got all the chrome off but I painted them and not powder coat. They came out really nice on a 67' chevy pickup. No pits at all.

I had my stock 40 wheels sand blasted and powder coated white and the came out nice. The spare was a chrome wheel from a 60 and the shop I used had no issues sandblasting the wheel before coating. No dipping was needed.

Scout your area: any shop that chromes wheels should be able to do your work. Tell them you only need the chrome removed in the acid-dip and to leave the nickel plating. Should come out of the bath with a dull finish if done correctly.

Powdercoater will still want to abrasive blast the wheel to get some "tooth." The powder coat adheres to the roughened nickel plating just fine, flowing over the rough surface as it melts to produce a smooth finish.

When I got mine done I just had them blast the chrome off and then coat them. They said it was standard procedure and they look fine. I ran into some issues with out-gassing during the baking process and had to switch businesses to get them done right. PM for more info. What color are you going for?
