Blacked-out bumpers (more de-blinging)

I used plastidip. Spray on to protect, peel off when you want to sell. No prep needed besides a wipedown with the cleaner of your choice. Been on for about a month now, holding up great. Haven't done any wheeling with it yet but it seems durable enough. Gonna do the wheels this weekend to match.

My brother and I will be using plastidip too. He's got some chrome trim on his 4 runner he wants to black out and I want to paint the trim, front, and rear bumpers on my white LC. I'll post pics up of finished work. I know plastidip is for real because he's gone through dozens and dozens of car washes and it's held up nicely on his emblems.

How is the plastidip holding up for you?

Very well so far. We're now well into our snow season and the mag chloride on the roads combined with several high pressure car washes hasn't phased the stuff. I'm actually very pleasently surprised about how durable it is. I've been meaning to get the wheels done with it but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

That's reassuring to read. Thanks for replying and even more motivated to get the bumpers covered up with plastidip.

Oops, meant to ask you what other areas on your LC did you paint with plastidip.

Grille, rear emblems, side trim, and rear bumper. I don't have any good pics right now, let me see if I can't grab one before it gets too dark.

Pardon the bad angles and crappy cell phone pics. There wasn't much room to stand in the front due to the snow and shubbery (Nee!).

Nice look, Fuzz. You were able to leave everything on when you sprayed the p-dip, right? maybe you have a thread on this p-dip mod that I should read?

Search for a thread called "plastidip wheels", I think thats the one where it was most recently discussed.

I didn't pull anything off, just gave it a quick wipe down w/ simple green, masked off the area around it, and sprayed. I didn't sand anything either. I could peel it off and return the truck to stock appearance in a matter of a few minutes (edit: I made the mistake of sanding and painting the grille w/ regular black krylon and hated the way it turned out, so I covered it with p-dip and it looks 10x better - the grille is permanently blackened as a result though).

In retrospect, I'd use isopropyl alcohol instead of SG as it would probably evaporate more completely...but I haven't experienced any adhesion issues so far. The stuff is actually pretty tough once it dries.

Once again even more motivated to paint the bumpers and trim. Thanks for sharing the pics and great job on the bumpers/trim!

Thanks for the compliments. I'm very happy with it compared to the OEM gray...but like Pint's truck, it's black but looks gray-ish in certain light. Contrasts nicely with the OEM gloss black paint, and matches all of my matte black vinyl stuff perfectly.

Alot less prep work than paint though, and it's almost impossible to screw up. Even if you spray it on so thick that it runs, it evens itself out really well as it dries. If you do manage to goober it up...just peel it off and start over! :D

That looks great Fuzz! One more thing to add to my "to-do" list! Thanks!

Looking good. funny you bring up the past Pint Truck...love the Black TRD on the quarter.
It appears by the look of the truck, you like it clean as do I.
How does this stuff clean on the large surface area (Bumpers) ???. Is the surface rough?
Thanks. Sorry if you answered these ?'s on Pg 1 - I can never get it to load.

Has anyone tried white Plastidip? My LC is white and I was thinking about using white Plastidip to refinish the side trim as well as the front and rear bumpers (stock with some scars). I'm thinking it may look decent if the finish has a nice gloss to it.

Thanks! Give me a shout if you want an extra pair of hands to help out. Weekends off through the rest of this month.

The finish isn't smooth like paint and holds dirt a little more easily, but overall it cleans pretty well. Dirt likes to collect on the step area of the rear bumper, but that was true with the OEM paint too. It's just a little more visible now when dirty. Not a big deal IMO, these things look better dirty...especially the black ones. :D

I do like the clean low profile look. I don't have much in the way of stickers, just the hood blackout, USA flags, matte/gray TRDs on the sides and a Crawlorado decal in the back window (edit: ok that sounds like alot, but then I compare it to nick's rig and chuckle ). Going to put the magpul triangle logo and skull (like my avatar) in the rear window, just not sure if I should get them in black (since they probably wont be matte black like the rest), or red so they pop out a bit...

Plastidip is available in red, blue, white and black...but I'm fairly confidant that due to the kind of product it is, all of the finishes are matte. That being said, I've heard of people using plastidip as a primer, and then painting over it. Some clear coat would probably work fine if you want a glossier finish.

Your truck looks great!

D

JB- Rig looks great. I hate to be the only one here with negatives. But IMO the black on the tail lights are a bit much. Never been a fan of that type of stuff. Maybe it's the photo's.

either way looks 10Xs better than when you bought it. If I paint something on my body (lets say hood :) ) can I peel it back off if I don't like it?

Thanks man. What, no comment about the random Monty Python reference? :D

I know the blacked out trim on the lights isn't for everyone, but personally I think it looks awesome...but then again, my truck is black so I'm all about adding more black to it, heh. I sort of did it on a whim when I was taking the orange stuff out of the lights, and I was happy with the outcome. Thanks for the compliments. Still has a long way to go though. Needs more lift! (and sliders, and a rear bumper, and drawers, and...yeah)

As for painting your hood, yes. It peels right off as long as you apply it properly and with enough coats. It has to be apply in several layers to be thick enough to easily remove, otherwise it will tear when you're trying to remove it. Ask me how I know, lol.

Okay...

Started plastidip on the grill and this stuff is amazing. 5 coats and i'm done. Will continue with trim and bumper tomorrow.

Applied 1 coat at a time every 15 minutes and dries evenly if with some slight overspray.
