Good Morning All,

I recently purchased my 2nd FJ40 and hv a question about black sooty tailpipe.

The 40 runs pretty much perfect ! Idles great, plenty of power, really happy with it. H/ever is has a very black and sooty tail pipe. Spits sooty bits on start up.

Also hv an exhaust leak, believe along the header as the cab gets a little dizzy !

I was wondering if its possible to solve the Soot issues w/out disturbing the idle / carb adjustment. It runs so well, I am timid about messing with the carb. Its a 79 40 with a 2F engine, weber aftermarket carb.

Thanks for any advice/info on this matter.
Hv a nice weekend.

Does the exhaust have a sweet smell?

Cove,
my pig spits sooty bits on startup too. I thought that was normal.
But, IMNSHO, these tractor engines run better rich than lean. They love rich.
Maybe that's why you're loving the way it's running.

I have the same issue. 72' 40 with 2f and weber. runs great, Idles fine but have the soot on start up...I just left it alone. Mine likes to run rich also.

I've got the same thing. 2F with a Weber carb. Spits out soot on every start but otherwise runs great so I don't mess with it.

Mine was worse before I rejetted the Weber 32/36 and set the idle mixture. I now have the idle mixture screw out 2 1/4 turns but that took a change from a 60 primary idle jet to a 90. Before it was out 4 1/2 turns and the idle speed was screwed in tight. I'm not sure which Weber you're running but make sure your baseline #'s are correct or you may be too lean/rich. The idle mixture shouldn't be out more than 2 and a 1/4 turns to achieve the best mixture and the idle speed shouldn't be screwed in more than 1 and a 1/2 turns once it contacts the plate.
