its good to see this truck go to a good home.. this bj74 was my truck before i sold it to the guy that you bought it from.. i cant wait to see the final result!!!
 
weellll, i do have a brand new factory 12v clutch sitting here in the box ...

I have a 12 v clutch. Put the compressor on the 74 when the old one went out this summer.

That's cool. Did you replace the altimeter pod with one from a prado? The inside temp doesn't work, and I don't have a clue where to look. It always -29c
 
I finished bracing up the 74 tub to begin serious work on it. I intend to cut out a lot of the firewall, so I didn't want any flex. I have looked over other conversions, like Lumpy's. He spent a lot of time working on the wipers, and the fresh air vent. Good to know, so I will try and take as much as possible, so it could get real unstable with all the metal on the firewall removed. So I probably overbraced it, but the alternative of not having enough bracing was not very appealing.

I don't have the stands to mount the 74 tub to do the sandblasting for another week (borrowing from a friend) so my next job will be to cut out the firewall on the 70. I want to see just how much I can cut out and put into the 74. I would like to get the whole front, and the fresh air vent and wiper mounts. Not sure if that will all come out, but better to experiment on the donor 70 than on the 74. If I just get the top of the firewall, it will still make it much easier to cut a fresh air vent and patch up the old fresh air vent. I am going to sandblast the seams on the 70 so I can see the spot welds better, and begin drilling them out. I have tried spot weld drills, but they have all been a PIA, so I will just drill them through. My arms are sore just thinking about it.......
Next--cut the firewall out of the 70
Get the 74 on a rollover and sandblast the bottom and firewall seams (Sandblast Frame and axles while I am making the mess-it will be an all day job)
Paint Frame
Rebuild and paint the axles
Install Axles and suspension
Fix the rust holes in the tub somewhere in this process, and paint the bottom of the tub
Mount the tub back on the frame
Then go to work on the firewall of the 74.
That pretty much shoots the rest of 2012

That's what I'll be trying to do. Wayne, I've looked at your "cut no corners" builds, and I am very impressed! I hope mine is as good as yours! Well maybe almost as good.....

Sandblasted the firewall of the donor BJ70 this morning. Thats all I will get done today. It's my anniversary, so it's ladies day for the rest of today. 34 years of putting up with me and my habits :)

Firewall removal

Last night I learned what to do, and what not to do. I got the entire firewall removed. If you do not have any rust in the seams that you need to address, it will easily remove by drilling out the spot welds on the sides, cut across the floor on the bottom, and through the windshield channel in the corners.

If you have rusty seams, then you are better off by drilling out the spot welds before you take the firewall out. Much more stable. I probably drilled more than I needed, but there was a lot of rust in the seams I will need to address.

I would have never done it this way if I hadn't read your thread, and the challenges of the fresh air vent and the wipers.

About 3 hours to get it out.
Probably 2 hours of staring at it trying to figure out how to take it out
 
Wow... that is impressive.

I won't ruin your hard work by tell you: Fresh air vent and wipers were really easy to deal with on mine.

Oops, I said that out-loud.

The hard part: the BJ70 has a different sized windshield than a BJ74. If you want to save a little work and make the wipers just about perfect... get a wiper linkage (and maybe wiper motor arm?) from an HZJ75 mine truck (Wayne?). I am 95% sure it will work better.
BUT... I also think that the BJ70 wiper arm post location isn't quite right for the BJ74 or HZJ75. If you look at the BJ70, I believe there is an indentation just next to the stock wiper arm post location... where a BJ74 LHD (ie: HZJ75) wiper arm post would mount.

Seriously though, the level of commitment on this project is incredible.
 
I installed the altimeter pod. I bought it from Radd Cruisers and it was from a Prado. They sent me both temp sensors, but I was not able to get the interior one to work when I was bench testing it, so I just never hooked that sensor up when I installed it.

Great work, I am happy to see it went to a good home. What did you do with the wheels that were on it? I preferred them to the ones pictured?

I don't even know where the sensor is!

I sold the wheels that were on it. The ones in the pic are just the rollers from the BJ70. I sold them already too. I am going with 285's on american racing BAJA type, like the 79 BJ73 for sale on mud
