So I have the idea of converting the near future 73 to a 9.5 inch front end with a 24v E-Locker. That is down the road but I have a few questions.

Brakes between the old 70s and the new 70s. What has bigger brakes? Rotor wise, caliper wise.

Is there any parts that are the same? Are brake parts hard or going to be hard to come buy if I go this route changing out front ends?

Rotors are the same, calipers have 4 larger pistons instead of two smaller and two larger.

I'm assuming the 73s have larger brakes because they are newer.
Now 80 series calipers work if you take the dust cover off for the rotor or cut them to accommodate the new calipers.
I am going to assume the 80 series calipers are larger too.

Are post 93 80 series rotors bigger than the 73s? Could these potentially work for a Big brake mod?

i am going to be doing the same on this troopy build but i will use the tube assembley from the large diff and the knuckles etc from the smaller diff.

So am I able to use the birfs and ect from the smaller diff when I do this? So an even tougher front end? Sweet.

The >1990 70 series birfs are so close to the size of the earlier 70 series that I don't think there is any really substantial difference.

John,
I am doing this more for increased birf strength and ease of application. on a recent tear down of a PZ i noticed the ring around the birf which i feel is a benefit to strength.

plus, cause i can. the parts are here. i can locate a tube assembly easier than i can a full hub to hub diff here. if i still lived in alberta, no problem. here 70s are still a rare bird.

There is also about 1mm more diameter to the later 70 series bell.

I wonder what destructive testing would show - should send some of these in to someone like Bobby Long and his birf killin' machine.

agreed but i can't afford to send brand new factory birfs to be busted.
using used wouldn't be a fair test, would it?

so can you use the later style birfs in the pre89 housing?

Does spline number matter?

Should fit, it's only 1mm larger in dia. I do not see any advantage to this.

The splines are the same.
