So i found this rig. here's the deal... 1987 bj 70, 330,000 km's, 5 speed with a 3b, decent suspension, good tires, good interior owner wants 8 for it. the kicker is it has been sitting in a barn for four years, is not registered in BC, needs a windscreen + whatever else after sitting for that long. oh and the back has fiber glass work done to it. what would you guys pay? I was thinking 4 would be fair cause there is gonna be some work to do.

$4K max, i am thinking more along the lines of $1500
some Cruiser owners think they are sitting on Gold bricks.

i remember an old FJ45 i found in BC, stopped in to look at it. owner came out and we started chatting.
it didn't run, bald tires, rust, seats had more mouse s*** than material and he wanted $2500 ...

last i saw it the thing was still sitting there years later ...

gonna go and take a look on sunday. so the story goes... it's an ex mine truck form alberta. he got it up to snuff and licensed it. drove it daily for a year or so and then moved to BC been in his barn ever since. the fiber glass work makes me wonder as does the sitting. the interior is really clean and there is no rust on the doors etc.. we'll see. 4 is a long way from 8. that's just where I think i would start not having seen it though. the pics look pretty good though. what would i expect to have to do maintenance wise?

if it is an old mine truck then i would want to see tons of pics of before and after. take a close look at the frame and diffs, if a potash mine then look at anything aluminum for corrosion.
i didn't ever see a short wheel base 70 from the mines, that would be interesting. mines are notorious for interiors being trashed, engines worked hard, bodies beat to crap.

i wouldn't make an offer at all till i took a look at it in person and to help keep the rose colored glasses off i would take a second person with me that has no interest in the truck. that person will point (hopefully) out flaws that you might not see.

I would walk away. There are better units out there. I paid 4700 for my bj-70. Came with emu suspension. 33 inch bfgs and a laundry list of maintenance work done. Got it in Red Deer last year. Keep looking.
