Hello IH8Mud.com,

I'm sure this isn't the correct forum etiquette for my first post, but alas, I figured start with this then become more of a contributor when I have something to actually contribute! My cousin forwarded me to this site, which I have been stalking for the past month, and I have messaged a few people on the forums who have been more than helpful.

Currently I'm in the market for a manual 1985-1988 bj70 or bj74, preferably 12V and LHD, with decent interior and minimal to no rust. It would be great if the truck was done up a bit, but don't mind finding a stock one either and working on it over the next few years. I know the 12v and LHD isn't really plausible for the 74. Something like this would be my dream truck, but after a few tries I couldn't contact the owner. https://forum.ih8mud.com/vehicles-t...mely-rare-turbo-diesel-bj-70-landcruiser.html

For my first post I figured I would at least give my family Toyota history, assuming anyone cares! My Dad used to own (at various times) an fj40, Mirage and a bj42 (5 speed). The truck I grew up in as a baby and through the few years in Canada was the bj42. I have nothing but fond memories while we owned it. We didn't think we would be able to bring the bj42 when we moved to Florida (18 years ago) due to emissions, but as it turned out, it wouldn't have been an issue! His brother bought the truck right before we left and each year when we went back we would watch it rust to nothing. My uncle eventually sold it for parts. The truck was nearly mint (minus some trail abuse) when we sold it to him and I have a bit of bitterness when he let it just rot away. I always wanted to buy the truck back once I had a bit of money to do so. A handful of family members and friends have bought and restored bj42's over the years thanks to my dad infusing their blood with how epic these trucks are.

I'm hoping to get one back again, but the bj42's in decent condition are a bit out of my price range and I'm thinking the bj70/74 will be a better daily driver since it will replace my Toyota pick-up.

Sorry for the ramble and any help would be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Nigel

A 70 Series in the U.S. is a "rare" find however our Canadian neighbors might be able to help you.

finding a low rust Canadian BJ70 is going to be a challenge, most will have had some bodywork.
BJ74 LHD never existed so a RHD converted to LHD will be the answer.

best of luck in the search.

Rust combined with the scarcity of 70 Series parts here in the States can drive even the toughest to tears or alcohol.:)

Appreciate all the help.

I called the guy about the one in Georgia that you linked to, the owner is asking 22K for it. I may be wrong, but that seems a bit high with some of the other ones I've been seeing floating around. I've pretty much searched every bj70 sold on here from the beginning. Sent out out a few e-mails hoping the rigs were kept...no luck sadly!

As for rust, if the truck has had body work that's by all means fine, I would just rather not buy one that is barely being held together.

Thanks for the info on the 74. I figured they only came in RHD (which I'm fine with if I can find one), but wasn't sure.

I have family back in the motherland keeping an eye out for me.

Thanks again for the help.

I believe the BJ70 in Georgia is a consignment vehicle and the price may be set by the current owner.

Even though 70 Series are often priced much lower across our northern border, prices in the low to mid $20's are not uncommon here in the States for a good example. ( this is not a reference to the one in Georgia in particular )
Good luck....

For better luck with LHD, search BJ73.

BJ70's in Costa Rica

Nigel,

I have been to Costa Rica twice, and I know there are BJ70's there that will be left hand drives...I think they would be ok to bring into the USA as well...but don't quote me on that...try this website to look (it is CR's version of cars.com).

Take care and good luck,

Jeff

Much appreciated Jeff. There are some really nice cruisers there, but I would have no idea how to import them and imagine it wouldn't be cheap.

You all have been a wealth of information. I wish I had joined this site earlier.

Selling

I have a 1985 RHD bj73 for sale near Philadelphia. A few have asked me for photos which I will get this weekend. I am having a hard time registering it in PA but I know in other states it won't be a problem. PA has very stringent rules. I imported form New zealand and it is virtually rust free.

What exactly is the State's issue with your Cruiser? ( engine, emissions, paperwork
Etc. )
