as for the PTO there wasnt anything real close to latch to and I really didnt need it
4wd was just fine

yea the bumper and the whole PTO and tranny set up are off of the BJ74 he had just bought
the PTO setup is great but ARB says their bull bar wont fit with the PTO and I am looking for a Heavy duty bull bar set up that will work with the PTO I have seen some pics on the web with various setups but dont know about US availibiity
Anyone got any suggestions or links?
 
Either get a custom bumper made or get a winch model ARB and modify it. ARB used to make a PTO model but it was really meant for a Thomas PTO, not the factory winch. Anyways they are not making that model anymore AFAIK. Here are pics of Brian Monger's HJ61 bullbar modified for the factory PTO:

The difference is the 70 series PTO mounts lower than the 60 PTO so it is much harder to use the 70 fairlead as it is built into the front crossmember. An aftermarket fairlead would be much easier to adapt IMO.

I used to mnt. bike...a lot. I started mnt. biking in 1985 so trust me I know the rush you enjoy. Not only was it my transpo for nearly ten years, averaging 200 miles a week on it to get to work, I enjoyed trails on the weekend. I also skateboarded for many years. Rode dirt bikes too and I still snow board. Oregon has lot's and lot's of good single track trails too I might add. If you are in NorCal the Rogue River area in S.Oregon has very long and very good single tracks. But now that I live in JH where it is beyond trendy and everybody must wear a bunch of spandex to ride a bike the whole thing is just not appealing to me. Back when I used to mnt. bike we didn't need $1000 in clothing and gear to have fun and ride our bikes. A helmet and gloves yes but special sunglasses, special shorts, special shirts, special shoes, special underwear and special whatever was only seen on people who were racing their bikes. They now make mnt. bike seats that have a cup for you balls! You do not see a single person in JH riding a bike who is not wearing all that gear, WTF is up with that!? Like I need spandex to ride a bike! Gawd that is odd to me, what is next!? kinda like you were mentioning about the trendy 4x4 thing...and don't take that wrong, once again it is just me expressing my view on the subject of mnt. biking. If spandex is your thing, great more power to you!

Seems to me there is a good 70 sitting on the east coast waiting for a home. Already here in the USA and all ready to go. Priced at $7500 it seems to be reasonable, it has got some rust but doesn't look to bad to me....the link is posted, why not put in a call about it if you are serious about buying a non-USA TLC?

The "mall cruiser" comments I made were not meant to put you down. But you know that is what we call it when you have a 4x4 and don't use it for lot's for off-roading. It is not like I am/was calling you a jackass...simply saying you want/drive a mall cruiser. Not that big of a deal and I myself own 4x4's that never see dirt. And yea I agree that some modern day 4x4's are hardly mall cruisers...it is what the truck gets used for that makes it called such things, not the truck it's self. Kinda like the saying, it is how you drive a truck not the truck you drive that makes a good 4x4er'. I am sure most of you know what I mean.....

Ian, for your info (and you will know what this means) I ride a 1991 Specialized M2 Team frame (Ned Overend's world champ frame) with a 1989 Deore XT drivetrain, so you probably can figure out what my mountain biking is about.

OK so let's get this back to the question of the best BJ42/70. The JTOutfitters' rig is rusty, has unknown mileage, is missing its rear bumper, front looks twisted, etc.--just doesn't look well cared for. You can find better examples in Canada, such as this one. Granted, it doesn't have the lift, and even though it will cost me a few hundred $$$ to get it imported, it's a known quantity (one owner, mileage known, etc.). However, since dogstar is in the process of importing one himself, I'm going to wait to get advice and info from him before I import. Then I will take my time until I find the right rig. I'm not going to jump on the first one I see because it's easy to get.

Well, here's my story. I have been wanting a diesel Toyota truck or cruizer for a long time and looked hard into importing something from like Europe. But the cost involved and time and all was just too much for my budget and time. I really would have loved a 75 troopie or pickup. Oh well, so I found the next best thing. The BJ 70. Fortunately, I was able to get first dibs on Sheldon's 70 that he was selling last spring. It's a 86 with 24V system, has the 13B-T transplant and I also purchased a set of full floating axles with the cable lockers from him. Before this I had test drove a 85 BJ 70 in Colorado at some altitude and I figured I could live with the performance since I live at a more resonable altitude of about 500 ft above sea level. Anyway, so I picket up the cruiser at Sheldons, about a hr east of Vancouver, and drove it to Winnipeg to a RI and then to Fairbanks, AK. What a difference that little turbo makes in the mountains. I don't think I would have been able to cover all that distance in 5 days if I was driving a 40. The only thing missing is cruise control and AC. Now that winter has come to our great land in the north, we have had a bit of snow and ice and that sucker sure likes to flip ends fast. So I finally broke down and bought a set of studded winter tires for it and what a difference that made. Anyway, if you want something to do trips in, the 70 is definitely the better choice. Look on www.sor.com for BJ-70's for sale, some show up that are already states side. Look under the classifieds section.
 
Thanks taco. I actually had just emailed Sheldon about that rig, because it sounded really sweet though probably more truck than I need. Roger on the snow performance--a consideration for me. Congrats on the sweet rig!

you can shift on the fly in a 70 series (actually any series) so lock the front hubs and shift into 4WD H at any speed and back out when you are on dry ground again. you can drive at any speed in 4WD.

I think the biggest issue norcal is finding a reasonable clean 42 or 70. They are getting hard to find fairly clean without a ton of miles. If your used to low rust Cal vehicles your not going to be all that happy unless you spend some money or don't mind working on them. There is a Very clean one with low miles in NY... I'm suprised no one had bought it. I believe I've seeen it a quite a few years ago and it was very clean. I've thought about buying it and turning mine.

There's also a Cali titled '70 in So. Cal. I think asking price is high for the body work and other parts needed.

I have looked at that one, it is just around the corner from me. The description is accurate-frame and engine are in great shape, the body needs work but is salvagable. not too hard for someone with welding skills, but quite some work. The owner/seller is a great guy. He has 2 more 70s, one absolutely beautiful, the other a donor truck for engine and driveline. Also a gorgeous BJ42, a built 80 and a 100.
