Hello, would anybody have a working 24V starter for a 3B? Mine is clicking and when I bench tested the pinion is turning in both directions so I assume it's finished. Hopefully someone has one they would part with. I'm in Montreal Canada. Thanks
Usually the clicking issue is fixed by replacing the solenoid plunger and contacts. Cheap and easy, no real mechanical skills required.
The pinion should move in both directions. In one direction it will turn freely, in the other it will turn the starter motor. If this function does not work, you can buy a new clutch (also referred to, incorrectly, as a Bendix).
Neither the plunger nor clutch are electronic, so are not rare 24V specific parts AFAIK.
Don't replace the original starter with generic rubbish from eBay unless you are sure the original is beyond repair.

Thanks Jim. I tested the continuity from the S- lead to the solenoid post and s-lead to the starter body. The starter is testing GOOD. I think my problem may be the relay. The starter is clicking very loudly but it still may not be getting enough voltage. The batteries are 100% charged. One is brand new.
You can try working from the starter to the key.
Hotwire the starter, she should kick!
On my hdj81 24v starter, I actually added a momentary switch to starter which allows a start using only one battery as an emergency option.
Could be a bad fusible link, this might test ok with a test light, but will not offer enough power under load.
Thanks for the info Squash. I will check the fusible link. I ordered a relay from megazip.net as it was 1/2 the price of the dealer. I wanted a new one as the old one is sketchy and all the printing is gone on it. Plus I needed stuff for my 4Runner and they have a 20% off special. Code is ELDER. Only a couple of hours left.
So far you have condemned a starter motor because the pinion gear turns in both directions, and condemned a (very reliable solenoid type) relay based on its appearance. Might I suggest that you get hold of a Factory Service Manual for a 40, 60 or 70 Series diesel Land Cruiser and do some basic diagnosis before replacing parts that may be perfectly functional.
You can open those old metal cased relays by bending back the tabs and pulling the cover off firmly. If something looks burned inside then go ahead and replace it, but they are really very robust.
Megazip have constant promotions running of between 10 and 30% discounts. I find them expensive, though their customer service is excellent. Amayama have similar, if slightly slower service and better prices. Impex are very cheap but quite astonishingly slow.
Well. The lower mounting hole on the starter is stripped. Figured I may as well replace it but I agree it's not a good way to troubleshoot. I'll tap a new hole but will still eventually get another unit. I like to have spares. The relay is the later BJ60 part and crazy expensive. Figured I get it now and not wait until they are unobtanium. I'll still open the old one but not without a spare on hand.
Not sure a manual will help. My truck's a Johnny Cash special. It's a '79 (body) ,'82 (frame), '85 (engine) ...
The BJ60 starter relay, 28300-54070, is not available any longer, so Megazip will be giving you your money back on that. Should be easy to find used in case yours really is dead.
