Hey all,
I am going to have my front and rear brakes done soon by les schuab. I figured the repack would be cheaper if I had them do it at the same time. For those who have done it, do you think this is a job for someone with out a lot of experience such as the tire place technician? Or should I buck up and do it myself or take it to the toyota dealer.

Thanks

With all the delicate work (tapping the new seals in), torque specifications, different greases, etc..... I'd just do it and the brakes myself rather than have them do it.

I don't think Les Schwab would be good for this job. They change a lot of tires and do brakes and wheel bearings, but the birfield is "deeper" than what they usually deal with and is a toyota specific thing, something I doubt they deal with very much. I would only trust it to myself or someone who is very familiar with the job, ie. correct type and amount of grease, all new seals, etc....
FYI- If your rotors are bad, most on this board will not recommend resurfacing rotors on an 80 series as they will likely warp very quickly, better to get new rotors from cruiserdan.

The Les Schwab guys here were clueless when I talked to them about birfields. Go to the dealer.

D

I agree with the others. I like Les Schwab generally for tires or alignment, but they are not Land Cruiser mechanics. Remember the guy working on it has probably never worked on a closed knuckle truck. You should do it yourself and learn something important at the same time.

Never heard of the place your talking about, but for Birfs do it yourself with some other Cruiser Heads, only you and others who love this particular vehicle will take the time to do this right and you'll learn a s*** load in the process. I have trouble trusting tire and wheel places to even do what they specialize in correctly. Glad God invented the Hunter 9700.

Earl Grey milk and no sugerl thank you very much. I am probably about 5 hours away, it is a while since visting the Garden of England, my brother lives across the river in Gillingham. I just had one of my seels done and I have a sneeking suspision they filled the joint with hypoid!

Is this an 80 series we are talking about or a 40?

If the 80, do the Birfields yourself. Not only will you gain confidence and experience tearing apart your truck and figuring out how to put it back together, you will also assure yourself that you did it right per the specs. required by Mr. Toy. (cf. Get a Factory Service Manual: FSM).

Depending on where you are located geographically (I assume out West as there are no Les Schwags out East), you might be able to have other Cruiser heads help you...if you are in Ohio, Wetern Penn., or Sourthern MI., you are welcome to come to my house in Akron, OH and do the Birfields. I'll provide the all important
and a warm garage, and I will help too, though I've only done it once, so doing it again will likely help me too.

So in the end, do it yourself--Les Schwag is horrible! I bought four Toyos for my Acura and they totally balanced it incorrectly.

Best of luck.

Hi Gold finger, where abouts do you live, you could be devon/cornwall or up north, to be 5 hours away, yer gillingham is not to far away but far enough... LOL

West Wales about 6miles from Llandysul 19 North of Carmarthen

I never been to west wales but often been to the Snowdon area, hiked to the top of snowdon in March, really nice lot of snow, loved it, so did my Alaskan malamute pup, mind you I was sooooo knackered when I got back down to street level... LOL

Thanks for the support guys. I guess I should do them myself. I am in Enumclaw, WA so if anyone wants to give a hand I will provide beer.

I am up in Bellingham and would volunteer a garage for the project if needed. although I will be in the lynwood everett area by feb or march. (Job transfer for the better half) as far as the breaks go unless your rotors are boogered they should take you less time to change than it does to jack up the truck and take off the tire. super easy. Drop me a pm if you would like some help but I think the seattle cruiserheads will be a lot closer to you. check them out at www.notjeep.com/forum. the list there is pretty dead but some good guys down there.
Dave
