I have a 64 fj40 that is pretty much stock. I envisioned using it on very rare occasions, but I got the bug and it turned into my daily driver while my daily driver sits in the garage. I tuned it up (points plugs wires ign timing) but, even though it seemed to run well, I get 6-8 mpg.
Some history: It sat in a field for about 12 years I got the breaks working and replaced the 1980s tires with stock size BFGs. When I got it the linkage connecting the to the vertical rod going up through the carb was disconnected and it still ran OK. The linkage wouldn't stay on because the hole in the shaft on the carb became out of round. I used a small zip tie instead. I previously took apart the carb and everything looked clean. The float was empty. It starts right up and any choke no matter how cold, causes it to stall. It appears to be running rich
I recently purchased a rebuild kit from cruiser parts and it was the wrong one. I did discover that the float has some fluid in it.
My Questions:
1- How do I drain/ reseal the float?
2- Where do I find a rebuild kit?
3- Do you recommend going with a different carb?
4- the action of the carb is stiff, like something is rubbing not like it's gunked up. The PO put an external spring running from the bottom linkage to the upper part of the carb to assist it in returning to the closed position. Is there supposed to be a clock spring on that bottom butterfly linkage? Where can I find one?
5- How do you recommend that I fix the hole on the vertical rod so I can use real linkage?
Non Carb Questions, While I'm at it.
The manual lists the intake valves at .010 but the sticker on the engine lists them at .008 I went with the sticker. Any input on this?
The front axle seal is leaking (not too bad yet) Any recommendations for it's replacement? From what I see on here, most people replace the whole axle with a later model
I have the original wiper motors, but I'd like to use a later model wind shield wiper setup. Any advice on modifying a late 60s setup to bolt on to the 64?
Thanks!
Ken
