I feel your pain, all those last little jobs just seem to take forever, but rushing no is not the answer. Sit back have a beer the end is in sight.

Hope the heat does not mess up the paint job.
Was all that paint: high temp paint?
It is too perty to have the heat destort such a perty thing as
as her.

It was all 500 degree paint.

Fan clutch delema.

Original fan was fixed.

New fan is a fan clutch unit for a fj60.

1st problem.

Original fan shroud from my 76 2f was to low and to small for the new fan and clutch.

Poser was nice enough to send me one from a later 40 that had a fan clutch system. Thanks man I owe you a few.

1st problem led to the second problem.

2nd problem

The new fan shroud makes the fan line up correctly but the fan is still to damn big for the fan shroud.

I got very little time to get this right. As OMT in Tellico is next weekend. What should I do?

1. I could cut the shroud and weld a new band for the big ass fan

2. I could cut the fan to fit the shroud thus reducing the cooling capacity of the fan.

3. I could put the crappy fixed fan back on.

4. I have no clue. Maybe I can buy a new fan that fit's this shroud and clutch. The clutch is brand spanking new. I hate to have to ditch it.

Ideas????

Don't cut the fan it will lose it's balance.

I would make the shroud fit the fan cut and weld a new band.

Don't go back to the old blade

76-78 fan for fan clutch is what you need. the FJ60 and late FJ40 fans are at least an inch or two bigger in diameter. IIRC youre looking for a fan clutch fan without the wierd little diverters on the ends of the blades.

So were the clutches for 86-87 fj60s the same as what came in 40's that had fan clutches? COuld I just buy a fan for a 40 with clutch?

My fan is 17 1/2 inches wide the 4 bolts holding the fan to the fan clutch are spaced 3 3/4 inches.

Both shrouds are different as far as fan location but the fan opening is only 17 1/2 wide.

custom shrouds and radiators

For the price I'm sure you could get it in any color;)

If it helps you can have the fan and shroud off of my 76.

ETA: I have a fan and shroud off of my 83 2F (from a 60) that you can have also to get you to OMT. I'll just need some sort of replacement when I finish my rebuild (read who knows when...).

Anybody have any ideas?

Marshall, I used a fan from a 60(with the diverter dealies) and a shroud from a fan clutch equipped FJ40 and it all worked just fine. I don't know why you are having the problems you are having:confused:
Does the shroud have 4 bolts on one side and 3 on the other? Seems like my shroud measures 18"+...........???????????????

Yeah I'm thinking the same thing. What I need is for someone with a fan clutch style 40 to go measure the fan shroud.

I can take measurements for you tonight after work should someone fail to chime in sooner, but I can't imagine that not happening :D.

Am really bummed to not be able to afford a second round of diesel to make OMT - but we do have a NFC run that same weekend - and well, no offense but that krew wheels a little harder! I will most definitely be missing out on your cooking, seeing psychedelic clowns, and catching up with everyone.

So, does the shroud have 7 bolts total? I know mine is a tight fit, like maybe 1/4" between fan tip and shroud.

That's the same as mine. It's so tight that under extreme flex, the fan has actually nipped the shroud a hair...

I currently have 2 shrouds.

1 from my 76 that has the hole in the wrong area and does have the 7 bolts

1 sent from poser that has the hole in the right area and does have the 7 bolts

both are 17 1/2 wide opening which is the same size as my fan.

Troll, to make the fan a bolt in deal you need either:
1. 77-78 fan blade and shroud (you currently have this shroud).
OR
2. 79-end fan blade and shroud (you currently have this blade).

It is acceptable to trim 1" off the ends of the plastic fan blade. the trimmed blade will still move more air than any stock 78-earlier fan.
