Well, I got my Hella order last week and took a few minutes in the weekend to install the Hella Supertone horns. It is a very easy install for those that are looking for a quick (<1hr), simple upgrade using the OEM harness and relay:
- Unbolt the stock horns from their mounting location
- Pull off the positive lead that runs to the first horn (it has a plug attachment on the end and is something like ~18ga wire)
- Pull off the jumper wire (+) that runs from the first horn to the second
- As you will see, the horns are grounded to the frame using the mount, so there is no negative lead
- Cut off the plug from the OEM horn harness you removed above and crimp / solder /...a connector on the end (I will likely go back in the sping and rewire with a heavier ga wire as it is very thin and the wire is actually in fairly poor condition). You should also splice in the second cable that will act as a jumper to the second horn. I used a heavier ga wire so that when I go back I only need to upgrade one wire. crimp on a second connector at the end of the jumper and connect to the second horn. Use whatever method you want, but I used heat shrinkwrap on the connectors.
- Wire to negative leads ~3 feet long with and crimp a connector on two of the ends. Attach these to one of the terminals on each horn
- Run the wires behind the PS light to the body ground point on the inside fender just aft of the PS light (you could also ground to some other point - battery, etc). I ran this inside split loom as there are lots of sharp edges around. I spliced the wires together into a ring connector and attached this to the ground point.
- Bolt the horns back into the stock locations and make sure they are positioned so the hood can still close.
As other have said, they are louder than stock, but the tone is still quite high.
I'm still thinking about where to mount the lights (anyone have pics of the hella 4000s on a stock bumper) - very little clearance.
One thing to note if you order from Susquehanna Motorsports/Rallylights that I feel is not totally above board (this has happened a few times now) (1) if you just order the lights without the harness (like I did) because you are using a Slee harness or your own harness, you will be missing the hella plug that attaches to the light. They must be taking this connection out of the boxes and then just selling the lights. The reason I know this is that a friend had to give me his plugs which came with the lights and the tools. I think they are taking the connections, making harnesses and selling them.
Of greater concern to me is that they are advertising 'Hella' products and then replacing them with some other manufacturer. In my case, I ordered a Hella relay box to put all the relays in. The product came loose in a Hella box, but it's not made by Hella. In my case, it's not feasible to return the product (customs, shipping, trying to get taxes back, etc) - I'm not impressed and will likely try to find some other source.
Cheers, Hugh
