BFG mud vs. (1 Viewer)

I've had both BFG AT KOs and siped Goodyear MTRs, and can't say I noticed a difference this winter in snow/ice traction on the road (this is in New England). If anything, I would say the siped MTRs were slightly better, and definitely stopped better on dry pavement, too--probably because they are wider (12.50s) and have a larger contact patch than the ATs I had did (10.50s). I would say that if you are leaning toward more wheeling at some point within the expected life of the tire, then go with the MTRs now, sipe them, and be happy, because I gaurantee down the road you will want a mud tread at least. The compromises you will have make for on-road driving are no biggie. They catch channels in the road more than the 10.50 ATs do, so they want to wander a bit more. Not bad, though. They are also slightly, but only slightly, noisier than the ATs were.

Heck, the MTRs are also very noticeably more comfortable--more cushion, I guess, compared to a skinnier tire. This is all on an fj62 with OME lift...

Bear in mind that if you go to 33s, you'll probably want nothing wider than 9.50s - higher profile, narrower tire is the best combo for anything slick. If you must, 10.50s should fit even with a stock suspension, but the ride just isn't there.

Call me nuts, but I bet in an on-road only "blind" test drive, 99.9% of "us" couldn't feel the difference between a 33x9.5 and a 33x10.5.

IMO, my 33x10.5's look skinny already in relationship to the bulk above it.
It's a 4500 lb. rig, personally, I'd rather have a little extra width in the footprint for stability esspecially offroad.

That's my opinion, no offense meant to anyone.

I'll stop beating this dead horse. :)

tire debates are good. if you are going to go M/T then thake a look at the Trxus. I just put them on my truck. Good tire, siped lugs and more quiet than the BFG M/T.

And to your point Dave, on my 1hour drive home, switching from 10.5 to 12.5 wide I did not notice the difference. I am sure I will notice some "tracking" at somepoint but on the backroads and highway, no real difference.

I like how a "quiet ride" is N/A with the MT :D

yeah, I noticed that before I even posted the damn thread. it had me worried.

but the responses so far suggest it is negligable.

I don't understand why they don't have a 10 rating for "looks bad ass" in the MT column.

this is a great tire that many many many people use up here.
unfortunately there is only one size that will work for us, and it requires new rims, 16"

http://www.yokohamatire.com/tbs_tire_detail.asp?ID=SBRT&TireID=62

I may go to these based on the fact they handle the crap so well. especially where i am going to drive. they are commercial application tires. so you know they are tough.

too bad they are only 32" but the skinny profile makes them work awsome in the snow. we use them studded at the company I work for.

Look at Ben and Jes talking philosophy!!! Nice.

Oh, and BTW I can't belive this thread is 3 pages deep now, just go buy some freakin tires! :flipoff2::flipoff2:

Get the damn firestone's and you won't be sorry!

I really don't find them loud at freeway speeds, especially since the wind noise on my rack is so loud! (I really need a fairing!).

the M/t's aren't mildly louder than the A/t's I had on....this is on a 55 so take that as you will :D If you plan on wheeling more in a year...go with the MT...otherwise you will be wishing you had a more aggressive tire.

I thought about getting these tires but I was told by the folks at tire rack that they dont come in a 35 12.5 15. My MTR's are on back order for 30 days +.

Go with the firestones

Update on your tire choice?

Benji,

I was doing a search and wondered what you ended up getting and if you're happy with your choice?

I'm going through the same dilemna now...definitely going 33's...but MTs? MT/Rs? BFG AT's? kumho?? and what about the width? did you go 12.5 or 10.5?

Thanks,

all terrains suck unless you are on the street and dont wheel hard if at all.

go for a mud tire of anysort and u will be happier and better off. my rec would be a BFG or some TSL's I plan on runnin either the irocs or the TSL SX in due time and it will still be a daily to an extent.

35"m/t's on ice work great for a friend. of course he drives a ford powerstroke that probally weighs twice as much. i run 35" mtrs on the soa bj60 summer and winter and like them. they still wouldnt stop like studded winter tire though, nor would most muds. i have the geolander mt's on a diesel truck and also find them alright for summer and winter. if you already have at's, id run them when its icy, and get most any kind of muds for the summer.

Here is the rating BFG gives out:

A/T vs. M/T Comparison

The A/T's get a 9 for Mud Traction?! No Fawkin way! I've been running these tires on my 60 for 10 years now, an excellent all around tire, good on the road, great traction on a dry trail, 3 ply sidewalls for protection against sharp rocks, last for years. But they truely suck ass in mud, they cake up instantly and you're left with almost no traction at all which really sucks if you're on a steep mountain trail with a big drop off on one side. Look at the interlocking tread pattern, great for traction in most cases, but traps and fills in with mud!

Fortunately I live in Tucson where mud is rarely an issue.

IMHO

Matt
