I have been reading the FAQ section on tires. This is my first FZJ80.....so help me be clear on what I read. 305/70/16's will fit fine..?? That seems to be the consensus. Thanks all.

*no* rub at all??

Thanks for the newb answer.....I just joined LSLC. I'm not new to Toyota's, done plenty of work on four previous 4runners. Finally got the rig I always wanted though: 97, low miles and factory diff locks...now if it only had a SC.
 
Check a the 'search' for the s/c. A ton of threads on that. That topic has been beaten seneless. I'm runnin 285's and I've got no rub. Hope that gives you an idea. Welcome aboard. This is probably the best forum you'll ever see in your life! And if you need anything for the Cruiser (stock parts) send Cruiser Dan a private message and he'll hook you up.
 
I've had no problems with 305 BFG A/T.

Depends. Nobody has reported any rubbing with 285's (33's) with any of the aggressive treads or A/T treads on a 50mm OME lifted truck. It is unlikely you will have any rubbing when fully stuffed even with the stock suspension.

With aggressive 305's, you *might* get some minor rubbing (e.g. MTR's or M/T's) when fully stuffed (with or w/o 50mm lift) I've seen some minor flare rubbing with 305 MTR's on the LR when the truck was all twisted up and the LR was stuffed. Nothing to be concerned about but you asked and implied that *NO* rubbing at all was important to you.

if you might be running into any kind of mud, get a mt tire. BFG A/T's SUCK in mud.
went through some yesterday with my truxxus mt's that had them clogged up, wouldnt have made it in or out with the at's. same for running snow, the at's will clog up, and not unclog till you hit solid track or pavement.

Second that - watch the backspacing, rim width, etc.
 
I have 285/75 16 BFG at KO's and YES they will rub. Stock suspension, stock rims.

Granted they only rub when the suspension is compressed equally on both sides. When articulating, the tire clears fine and stuffs up into the wheelwell. When both sides compress, the outermost 1/4" of the tire contacts the innermost 1/4" of the wheelwell lip (not the flare, but the metal).

Granted; this was with a full load, at speed (60+ MPH), and did not deform the metal or tire, but did leave quite a black mark on the paint (and a loud "bbrrrrrt" on contact :whoops:).

I was very surprised to see that contact was made in the same spot on the front wheelwells ???

If you're bottoming out your springs at 60+ MPH then you need stiffer springs or you need to slow down. Maybe you can install & lower front axle bump stops (from a '93) until you get resprung.

Just curious, how old is the BFG AT? I'm talking about the same tire that is currently sold today. Has the tread design always been the same or has it changed? 10+ years?
 
I'm not sure about the tread itself, but I'm pretty sure there was a redesign in the past ~5 yrs.
 
The difference may be the KO and plan AT's, not sure. I see those two acronyms allot when people are talking BFG. I have the 285's from 1998 and the newer BFG AT's I see have lugs on the outer part of the wheel more then my AT's do, not that it would really help in mud. AT's do suck in mud....

BFG re-designed the A/T and M/T a couple of years back - the new ones get the KO and KM designations respectively. On the A/T the only real difference I can see is the added tread on the top of the sidewall - I think the M/T is quite a bit different.

The ko's and km's also have a rim protector.

Just as a point of interest, when I got the KO's for my 4Runner, the manager told me that Michelin actually makes many of the BFG truck tires including the KO's! I have had two sets of KO's on the 4Runner and liked them about 7 on a scale of 10. I also had one set of Michelin's AT tires (forgot the designation) and the KO's, in my opinion, are much more capable offroad and with snow mud etc. The Michelin AT's were better with wet traction. HTH
 
Michelin purchased the BFGoodrich tire branding quite some time ago. BFGoodrich Company got out of the tire business in the 1980s and as of a few years ago changed it's name to Goodrich Corporation.
