I am considering the MetalTech, but I would like to price out having a custom cage done. Plus I have some mods I will want and need a place to do those for me (have welder, but no bender).

Anyone know some good places for building cages in Seattle?

Steve

Other than doing it myself, there are only a few local places I would trust to do this work for me.

Mike Kash (he's in Gold Bar) will be doing mine when the time (and money) comes. Of course, I don't have his number on me... I'll find it and edit.

I would let Jason, Trevor, and Darius from S&N Fab work on my junk any time. S&N Fab

A little closer to you - I've never met him in person, but I've heard nothing but good stuff from people I trust about John at Auburn Car Repair & Offroad. 253-939-5019

Same deal for Pat at "Those Guys Road & Custom" over in Bremerton. About Those Guys Rod and Customs

Wow, thanks for the response. I wasn't sure I would get one at all. I would much rather be able to do it myself, but the cost of a bender, software, notcher, etc... Is it really worth it for one vehicle...

I'll go check out your links below.

Im sure Metal Tech can help you out if they are close..

If you like our cages at Redline, our kit will be fully notched ready to weld in place, PM me about what sort of custom stuff you are looking for, we may be able to send you a kit to meet your needs!

In terms of local, Washington area, absolutely it's Wild West Fab in Centralia, right off I-5. Tim Lund does all my fab work, he's built bumper hoops, locker armor, high clearance control arms, the chassis and cage for our hardcore buggy. He and his welder Donnie are artists on a welder. They just got a Miller Diversion 165 TIG welder to go with their other MIG equipment. On a side note Tim was ARB's main tech guy in the US for over nine years. Their website is basic, but his fab work is superb. I truly stand behind his welding work; your cage would be flawless.

Thanks for the nice words Dave.

FYI - The metal fenders and cage shown on that 40 are not ours, those are Metal Tech items and are very nice quality. I would highly recommend them if you don't mind driving down to the PDX area. I believe they offer their cage in a kit form, so if you want to do some of the work yourself, call Mark up and order up their kit.

I have my vendor star under Wild West Off Road (Wild West Fab) and am a supporting vendor here on Mud. We're a small shop that takes pride in doing very high quality work. We do sometimes have a pretty big wait time to get in, but are happy to help any Mud members any way we can.

*If you go with the Metal Tech cage kit and don't want to do the install, we can handle it for you.

** That list that e rock posted is a good one.

Do as I did. Drive to Portland and talk with the guys at metal tech. They are some really cool guys that enjoy what they do. I even got them to install my handles on my front profile hoop kit for free. It is totally worth the drive. Whats two hours anyway when it comes to gettitng a bad a$$ cage. I still think it was cheaper for me to drive from tacoma than to pay the freight cost, plus Portland has many excellent "EXOTIC ENTERTAINMENT" options if your gonna make day of it.

You could also call Chris Farrell @ Ferrel Fabrications in Puyallup. Great guy to deal with, excellent work.253)864-8017. Alex

We appreciate the kind words for Metal-tech. In the last eight years of specializing exclusively performance roll cages for FJ40’s we have evolved our cages in fit and materials. The 2009 models of our cages are now 100% DOM-SRA steel made for us to our specs. We do not use what ever the local venders give us. Ok we never did this in the past but we did have huge waiting times to get the material we required, now its made for us for more quality control.

We use 2” .120” wall DOM-SRA tube. Never use tube less than 2” in diameter for an FJ40! SCCA and SCORE rule books even say this for the weight of our trucks. Check with any vender that you are looking at for the size of tube they use. If its less than 2” ask if they can make it in 2” for you.

We always offer customizing our cages for your needs, both in kit form and in pre-built form. Just let us know what you would like, we will bend it how you want it.

Thank you for your consideration of our cages. If anything stop by the shop some time and say howdy, you will find only Toyotas here!

Hours?

What are your hours? I might stop by if nothing more than to drool ;)

Not really... I'd buy a cage too.

How do you think your cages will hold up in a roll over since the front hoop is bent around the dash? I would think it would weaken that area by giving it a crumple zone. Has that ever been a problem?

if I wanted you guys to weld in my cage could it be done in one day?

Steve

Formal hrs:

8:30 AM to 6 PM Monday – Friday
9 AM to 4 PM Saturday (call to confirm time)

Now we are a small business so those hours can end up being more like 10 PM etc. Just let us know when you are heading down and we will be here for sure.

Officially all cages are sold for show purposes only. However in the last 8 years we actually have lost count on the number that have rolled. Most famous was one in TX that we got a call from the owner saying it was time to order another one. Over the 2-3 yrs of running our cage he rolled it over 12 times, not flops but rolls. YIKES. Not what we recommend. He also got his replacement cage at cost, like we do with anyone who has gone over in one of our cages. (It’s like a monocycle helmet, crash on it = replace it. Same for roll cages)

Here is a shot of one of our local guys with a custom made MT cage from about 4 yrs ago. This cage was 2” 0.120” HERW tubing back then. Now they are full DOM about 30% stronger. This was a full back flip on lava rocks in central Oregon. (Nose guard also saved his windshield frame!)

Yes we can build most cages in one day. If you bring your truck down we will build it to your truck, OR we can use our 1200lb+ fixture and pre-build it. Built to your truck will make it a dead fit (all tubs are unique!) If you have us install it down here we are in the hart of the Oregon wine country with over 50 wineries around us. If you like aviation, one of the biggest private museums is 20 miles from us that even has the Spruce Goose. (you name it they have it, even a MIG 29! Full size upright Titan II rocket etc.)
