Hey, all! I have to buy new rubber and I'm interested to hear your thoughts. I need a set of tires that will see 95% road duty and the rest offroad. I'd like to stick with an MT (preferrably in 33x12.50 or skinnier and a 15" rim). I have siped MTRs now and they are loud (didn't start out that way) and have bad vibrations at certain speeds (they wore very unevenly, though my alignment may be an issue there, too). So: What's the best road tire with a mud tread? TRXUS? Toyo? They don't have to be brilliant in the mud. Just ok is prolly fine for the few times a year I go offroad.

Thanks!

By definition, the two qualities are at odds. Wide, deep spaced lugs equal good mud ejection but also mean noise. As far as I know. Seems like Toyo makes a nice tire. My MTR's are pretty noisy on the pavement but not as bad as a Swamper. That and they are 35's. People swear by the tread life of BFG's so maybe a KM2 is your choice. (no 15" rim sizes though as far as I know) Maybe get a closeout deal on some KM1's

How about BFG AT's and a set of chains? That's what I've been using (mostly snow rather than mud though). Or two sets of tires? That's where I am headed now.

Mickey Thompson MTZ and Cooper STT are popular here in Aus for all terrain type tyres. Kind of funny seeing as though they are US tyres, but they never seem to get talked about on here.

I have 33x10.50 BFG Muds on my 60 and love them. They're still new but I had good luck with them in the past. My tire guy told me that he had a hard time getting 4 of them in the 33x10.50 size; said that BFG is discontinuing them. They are still surprisingly quiet.... well compared to my 40's 38.5x14.50 TSL SXs. Mike

I would be tempted to try the BFG KM2, actually, if they came in a 15" rim size. They will be releasing the 15" and 16" KM2s in the fall, but I can't wait that long. Obviously there is no such thing as a perfect on- and off-road tire. I realize you have to compromise. Just curious what other people have found out there. I am leaning toward the TRXUS MT or getting the old school BFG MT and siping them...

the toyo mud terrain and the MTR that you have now are both great tires for what you want.
Tire rotations are very important as well as alignment. rotate them things every 4k miles and they will stay nice and quiet.

i have heard the truxus mud terrain is ok on the street but i dont really know. I am running the BFG KM's right now and they are reasonable would have stayed a lil quieter if i woulda rotated em but i dont really care as i will be going with bias ply swamper next.

I have no first hand experience, but have heard good things about the Toyo MTs as far as being a good on road tire. Apparently they have a bit more, or more effective, siping. You may want to search or post to the 80s section since they have discussed this very topic. But from what little research I had done when considering an MT, I was leaning toward to the Toyos because I heard good things about the road performance.

I have Maxxis Buckshots on my work truck (woods surveying) And they see 90% road...

I love the way the handle on the road, and they wont put you to sleep with the humming. They also dont have a problem cleaning themselves out. The only bad thing is the fact that they dont have sidewall lugs

Toyo MTs are sweet on and off road. Very $$$$, but retain incredable balence and roundness. Soft compound is great for rocks, but lowers life. They have a very 'square' profile- like it or leave it. Pro Comp Xtreme MTs are made by Cooper and have good road manners like the SSTs- genrally they are a bit cheaper. BFG MT and swampers all get some clatter at lower speeds as they age.

Has anyone had both the MTRs and the Toyos? Comparisons? Or for that matter, the MTRs and anything else, since that is my basis of comparison. I suppose I should mention that my road driving (and offroad driving, for that matter), are in the northeast, so we get all kinds of weather, including snow and ice, of course. That's why I siped my MTRs...

thanks!

I've run both Interco TrXuS and BFG M/T tires on my F350 (heavy) and the BFG's got louder over time. The Trxus tires were quieter from the start and never got loud. I did however only get 35K out of them. Both sets were load range E.

I currently have BFG M/T on my FJ60, and will replace them with Trxus tires when they are ready for replacement.

Good luck

I'm running 33x12.5x15 dunlop mud rovers and they're comfortable enough on the road, and I really don't notice a difference in noise or handling from my old BFG muds.

They have done great in loose dirt/rocks at the edge of the lake with weight launching a boat from land.

I don't have a lot of off road time with them, but you may want to search the 80 section for dunlop mud rovers. There is more info there and they seem to be holding up well even with the heavier 80s.

BFG AT's would be my vote. mainly because they are great on road and i have had no issues so. plus sounds like you spent over 80 percent of the time on the road. my 2 cents

I had some smaller Dunlop Rovers on my old 4-runner that I liked a lot but they wore out quickly. I have Yokohama Geolandar ATs on my Land Cruiser just now. They are only 31x10.5 so smaller than you want, but I believe Yokohama carries a pretty wide range. I have been a big fan of them and they have lasted a long while. If I had kept the truck in better alignment, they'd hav lasted even longer, so I'm with you in your search. I'm thinking about 16" wheels but either way, the geolandars are on my short list.

i run bfg ats on my stock suspension. Fixin to upgrade suspension and im gonna go with a bigger tire but a different one, because it seems like they just get really clogged

For mostly road and a bit of offroad, the BFG ATs are the bomb. You practically can't wear them out.

If it has to be an MT tire, the BFG MTs suck in my opinion. They are super noisy and unsafe in the rain. Very long wearing, though.

I thought MudRovers were OK for the $$, and Goodyear MTRs are very nice with good offraod manners too. I've got 2 sets of those.

A bunch of my friends have gotten the Toyo MTs and they like them. I'll try those next.

The TOYO's are great tires but dont come in a 12.50. In the size your talking about its a 33 13.50 15 which will rub. I have had very good luck with the Pro Comp x Terrains. I read a test a couple of years ago that rated them the best mud tire for on road use. I had a friend that had a set and ran them bald. They stayed quiet and had a very nice life. Mine are only 6 months old but I have had them to Lonestar round up, flat nasty, and Razorback ramble. Three different types of parks and they worked great and took a lot of abuse. I would buy them again.
