Ige,

Did you go w/ new u-bolts when you replaced leaves? Your pic in chat looks like it.

If so, where do you get your u-bolts? Locally? Catalog?

Lemme know, I ordered my springs!
yep...i'd had the old ones on and off too many times and they had lost their stretch...had my new ones bent up at midwest spring.

i'd have to go with the power steering...and probably the new seats

any new folk have things they want to add?

This is good, and will be in the FAQ!

#1. Power Steering - By far the best mod. (Saginaw)
#2. Lockers F & R - Has gotten me out of several muddy holes, creek crossings etc., but not always. (ARB)
#3. Rear disks - Just a little more stopping power. (TSM)

My 40 is in pieces right now, and was almost point and shoot for me when I got it.
New to me Configuration:
Rancho 2.5 lift
Worn 31" Hancooks
Nice set of Super seats
Tool box bolted in place of one of the jump seats

Modifications I did to it:
33x12.5x15 BFG AllTerrains
2-lo mod

Body mods by me:
2 lamp posts in the pass side in a blizzard... better than hitting the new Suburban on the other side of me.

Body mods by my friend Marc:

Brief description:

My original firwall and dash cut out of my mangled FJ40, welded into a right hand drive BJ41 Tub.
The '41 tub turned out not as clean as we thought, so we set about removing the patched original sheet metal, and implementing some Practical body mods. The Rockerpanels were replaced with 2x6 3/16" wall square tubing. The rear sill was replaced with 2x3 3/16" wall square tubing.
the forms for the wheelwell openings and all the rear quarter panels and rear corners made from 3/8" x 1" flat bar, then skinned with sheet metal. All other rust issues cut out and patched with new sheet metal.

Since getting the tub back from Marc, I've had a wee bit of a lull in activity. Actually I haven't really done any substantial work on Turtle in the year and a half I've had it back.

Work I've done since getting the tub back:

Clean and spraybombed the rear 2/3s of the frame.
removed the rear axle and suspension
removed the original rear crossmember and shackle hangers
Started building a new rear bumper/crossmember
Set tub on the frame
bolted rear axle and most of the rear susp. back in.
Temp installed steering in order to flat tow to my new 1400 sqft garage.
Parked it in the garage haven't touched it since. Tha was probably October.

Plans after I'm done my Kitchen remodel:

Finish rear crossmember/bumper
Properly mount body
Fab or modify and remount rear shackle hangers, to accomodate FJ55 lift springs. Wheelwell openings were formed to accomodate wheelbase stretch.
'55 lift springs infront as well.
60 series power steering, have the box just need the pump, and brackets.
Rear disc brakes.
4.11 or 4.56 gears, haven't decided.
Also haven't decided if I should get a locker, I could almost follow the locker boys before. It'll probably just get me into more trouble... Yeah I should get one, at least, want to save up for an ARB, or factory elec or cable lockers.
Full Metal Tech treatment: Full cage, Fenders, nose guard, stinger. But I want to figure out how to tie the fender, and nose guard together and to the frame to make the whole front end nice and solid.
And all the other whiz-bang goodies.
York onboard air
Onboard welder
8274
Adjustable shocks, Rancho, ProComp???
Really can't decide on tires... 37" would be nice. I really like the looks of the Parnelli Jones Dirt Gripz, but they seem to be the most expensive tires out there, and I haven't seen any realworld reviews, on them.

Dream list:
Orion
Toybox
H55
13BT or
1HDT

That's it for now.

new seats because they make any trip a pleasure
castor wedges in the front... because i like my rig to track straight and true.
detroit locker in the back... made it handle 100% better onroad, and has made me go from mild to stupid offroad :d

If you spend any time driving it on the road......

4 Wheel Disks , I drove mine around alot when I first got it and before I had done anything to it. The drums were fine, until someone in a new car locked theirs up in front of me. I was on the median avoiding them, and I drive like an old lady sometimes. When everyone around you has disk brakes you Have to have them too or you will drive up into someones backseat.

That was my first change, but while I was there, SOA, PS, Shackle reversal......getting started on linking the rear and Chev TPI W/Ford C4, 205 w/3 to 1 kit, going to try and stay with LC axles.

Would kinda like to start driving it again.....

Power Steering
Lift 35 inch tires
Winch (Ispend too much time in the snow)
LockerGears
Cage
preformance
Bling stuff

mods. everthing below, and duel battery set-up , longfield super axel kit.

Front disc brakes
I can't see how power steering could come before good brakes, I suppose it makes it easier to swerve around things that you are going to run into because you can't stop in time.

In this order
For my 72 FJ-40
function areas
1. AA Orion transfer case. Crawl ratio makes everything easy, just creep up and over anything

2. HFS 4" springs, Shackles and OME shocks, makes it ride and articulate so well that your not tired and beat up at the end of a run.

3. Locker in the rear

4. Power steering, wow big change

Comfort
1. Mastercraft Rubion seats with 2" added width, major improvement:cheers:

2. Sirius radio system

3. Comfortable suspension that does not leave you tired and beat at the end of the day

comfortable seats (your back will thank you)
P/S
ARB
36" TSLs (along with lift and trimming to fit em)

You'd have to redo the power steering if you later did an SOA right?
Not usually, I guess it depends on which kind you do. Mini P/S will interfere with bigger tires that go along with SOA. I have the Saginaw P/S and I don't plan on changing anything other than the pitman arm when I do my SOA.

I think I have done just about every mod that everyone has mentioned. They have all been great when done in the right order. One mod leads to another then another, and now 16 years later, I just did a mod (mod for me, but not for everyone) that made me smile as much or more than all my other mods.

My windshield has never folded down on my 63fj40. I don't know if the hinges ever worked. They haven't worked since I bought it. Their also wasn't any bumpers or tie downs, so, the windshield has always been up. Not any more. I now have a fold down windshield and It is now my favorite mod. Sometimes it's the little stuff that makes us happy! :)
