JUST WANTED TO KNOW WHAT IS THE BEST DIESEL ENGINE FOR MY 64' FJ-40? I AM INTERESTED IN THE 1HZ BECAUSE IT IS CLOSE TO THE 2F IN SIZE AND OUTPUT. I WANT TO STAY AS TOY AS POSSIBLE. LAST THING, WHERE WOULD ONE FIND A GOOD DIESEL. I FOUND SOME ON G&S BUT WAS HOPING TO FIND ONE IN THE US FOR LESS. THANKS FOR THE HELP. ???

Not very many 1HZ in the US as they were never offered in any Cruiser in the US. G&S prices aren't that bad, I've bought a few things from them and have been very satisfied. They're definitely cheaper than SOR.

1hz or ihd-t, or 13bt.

13bt is 4 cyl direct inj t-diesel, successor to b and 3b. apparently good swap... can be done with all factory parts apparently.

or the 12h-t...

i would recommend the 13BT, it has great snap and excellent fuel mileage. it is lighter than the 12HT and you can get a complete donor truck supplied or a complete rolling chassis. auto or 5spd.
email me direct if you are interested.

I'm going to use a 3B in my '64 FJ40. I did an impulse buy on an '82 BJ42 years ago and it ended up being a total rust bucket, too much bondo, too much rot. The wipers rusted to a stop on the drive home- thanks to a PO, only cutting and grinding would open up a hole to get to the joints. Fortunately the mechanics work perfectly (sans EDIC) so the entire drivetrain will be swapped in. Will be a while before this project starts- it will be the long, slow rebuild though. Other goodies include Paki split-windshield and oem-like softtop.

The color?

I saw this 40 at the roundup in Katemcy a couple of weeks ago. It had a Chevy 6.2 litre diesel in it. I didn't get to see the installation under the hood, but saw it in action. The thing was awsome! It was like a small locomotive that pulled people up the rocks they couldn't get up on their own. I got the idea that the installation of one of those into a 40 isn't the easiest thing in the world to do. I've seen various diesel engines and drive trains for sale on Ebay. Go to Ebay Motors parts section and type in "diesel". Everything from Isuzu to Cummins diesel engines and parts will come up. I've wondered if the small diesels that are used in the Volkswagen Jedda (or is it Passat?) wagons would work. You'd have to have the right kind of bellhousing, I guess.

I couldn't find any power/torque curves for the VW 1.9L TDI engine, but based on stats below, I'd think you'd have to push it pretty hard to move a 2-ton FJ40 around. Would rock in a Samurai.

Toyota Engines
---------------
"B" 2.9L, 21:1 compression, 4cyl diesel
80hp@3600, 141ft-lb@2200

"3B" 3.4L, 20:1 compression, 4cyl diesel
85hp@3500, 152ft-lb@2200

"13B-T" 3.4L (3B oem turbo), 4cyl diesel
116hp@3400, 210ft-lb@2000

"2H" 4L, 20.7:1, 6 cyl diesel
99hp@3500, 171ft-lb@1800

"2F" 4.2L, 7.8:1, 6-cyl petrol
135hp@3600, 210ft-lb@1800

Volkswagen
-----------
2003 1.9L TDI 4-cyl diesel
90hp@??, 155 ft-lb@1900

The good ol' 2F doesn't look so bad in this light, but graphs would tell the story a heck of a lot better than a number at a point in time.

Excuse my ignorance - Who is G&S who sell diesel engines?

thanks,

IMO the 1HZ is a good choice. Similar power to the 2F but a lot more torque.

My take is this: the 1HZ being a newer engine will also guarantee longer parts availability from the factory. The 3B, 13B-T, 2H and 12H-T are no longer installed on current vehicles. The 1HZ is a North American engine (despite being sold only in mine trucks) and there will always be a dealer or two selling parts.

13B-T is used in toyota commercials still (at least in australia)

According to the TLC FAQ: http://www.birfield.com/~ramullen/FAQ/TEXT/05-04.html

2F
Power: 135 HP @ 3600
Torque: 210 ft-lbs @ 1800

1HZ
Power: 135 HP @ 4000
Torque: 187 ft-lbs @ 2200

Seeing these numbers, the trusty 2F doesn't look so bad. Of course the 1HZ more than likely reaches 75% of its torque at a lower rpm than the 2F. Just a thought.

I personally want either a 1HD-T or 1HD-FT. By the time one purchases the 1HZ and a aftermarket turbo, they could have boughten a 1HD-(F)T. Of course parts would be harder to come buy, but not entirely impossible.

1HD-T or 1HD-FT... do you enjoy busting big end bearings :)

but i thinks those teething probs have been cured, so go ahead and dream of a 1hd-t. it's a nice motor... but $$$

One could always swap the big ends before swapping it in.

Yeah, the 1HD-(F)T is a lot of money. I keep going back and forth on a swap. My 2F only has 131k miles/210k kilometers on it. I'm sure I could get another 70-100k miles on her before she goes. But, man do I want a diesel. Especially the 1HD-FT with the APS intercooler. They claim an increase from 167 HP/125 kw of power to 218 HP/163 KW. For torque, from 280 ft-lbs/380 Nm to a whopping 347 ft-lbs/471 Nm. All I can say is DAMN! :o :D

well the FAQ is about 100% wrong.

1HZ
from the ENS literature:
129 hp, 210 ft-lb torque
and this is supported by current Toyota web sites:
96kW and 285NM for 1HZ

1HD-T (FT) is 118kW, 360NM equating to 158 hp and 265 ft-lb

from my 1981 USA brochure:
2F 125 hp @ 3600rpm 200 ft-lb @1800

and 1978 owners manual
125 hp (US) 128 hp (CDN), 200 ft-lb (US) 202 ft-lb (CDN)

oooppps

Hmmm...Who's the admin/mod for the FAQ? Rob Mullen?

What's the rpm range for the max power/torque of the 1HZ in the brochures? Maybe the power/torque was increased with the newer 1HZ?

Wonder if the power/torque was increase in the later 2F's? Can't find my '87 FJ60 manual...

Overlord ,The next version was the 3F in 84.I think N.America hung onto the 2F till 87 ,skipped the 3F and went straight to the 3Fefi.
Ive never been totally clear on this one so if someone knows for sure please tell.

2F 4230 6 G 135@3600 210@1800 12 OHV 94x102 7.8:1
3F 3955 6 G 155@4000 219@3000 12 OHV 94x95 8.1:1 added by me
3F-EFI 3955 6 EFIG 155@4200 220@2200 12 OHV 94x95 8.1:1

As you can see, there is not a big difference in performance if you take the rpms into account.

AXT has some figures on their site comparing stock 1HZ, stock 1HD-T and thier turbo'd 1HZ (i don't think its even intercooled!) I don;t know how accurate they are though. I'm hoping to get me one of these eventually 8) , maybe a safari unit ::)
