Searched FAQ and other threads but no one really has posted up a GOOD recommendation on gears as in WERE to buy WHAT BRAND and also WHAT KIND. Im new when it comes to gearing an 80 as I have always had jeeps before. So basically what I am asking is : Precision ,Motive, JTs Yukon , others? Heat or cryo ?

I know for sure Im going 5.29s as I currently have 35s and my 3fe is hating living in the mountains. But just want some advice on what to buy what lasts the longest my 80 is my DD. Also may be locking it front and rear when I regear what is a good choice in lockers( I have had bad experience with ARB so most likely won't go that route) what are other good options?

Also any Charlotte Boone NC area , Upstate SC or Eastern Tn guys know of a reputable shop to do gears and locker install...

Thanks

My preference is Precision, I bought a set from Christo, they made the nicest pattern. But I've also installed several sets of Yukons with no huge issues. The last set of gears I bought were Yukons from JT, great service, but I had a heck of a time getting a decent pattern. But I was putting them in a rear e-locker that had a rough history, it could be the housing is bent or something. That was 2 years and 30,000 miles ago, it's still running fine.

The Yukon setup kits are good, most of the time they have OEM Koyo bearings. But I never use the pinion seals, I always get an OEM seal, its much better.

Those sierra gears are good .?

We stock alot of the Sierras, but we can get Yukon, Precision, etc.

I've sold hundereds of sets of the Sierras, they have been great gears. They setup nicely, and the quality is always consistent. I've sold at least 2 dozen reverse cut Sierra gears in the 4.88 ratio, so far so good :D

I got Motive gears in the Sierra box. Motives have shown up in Precision boxes also. My front gears where a US Gear in a Yukon box, which is pretty common from what I've found out. Both US Gear and Yukon are great gears, many Truck and 4Runner guys prefer them as a top choice. Personally my picks are Motive, Precision, US Gear, Yukon. I made my choices based on ZUK's site and looking at how each brand setup. I'd say if you don't mind paying more go for the cryo treatment including the bearings, which ZUK can all do for you. I feel like people are probably getting tired of my plugs for ZUK but he did an outstanding job on my diffs and is a great guy to deal with.

Thats a great question ;)

Precision is the house brand of Reider Racing
Yukon is the house brand of Randy's Ring and Pinion
Sierra is the house brand of West Coast Differential (formerly owned by Randy ;))

They often get them from the same actual manufactures (to my knowledge Precision has never manufacuted their own, just as Yukon and Sierra have not either ;)) I don't know the hiearchy of it all, I just trust the gears I have know to be good quality. Ie. stay away from the Genuines, Valulines, Econo brand gears as they are likely a lower QC and material standard as the "premium" brands.

I recently received F&R sets of gears in a Precision box from JT. Both gear sets have the Motive logo engraved on the ring gear.

You might get the same gear out of a Sierra box too ;)

So where those rear gears in a Precision box worth $36 more than the Sierra box? :p

That's cool that you got a matching motive gear for the front also and for the same price as the Yukon boxes.

I have had several 'educational opportunities' with this project so an extra $36 here and an extra $36 there, are just drops in the bucket. I'm still doing better than you did though. (Knock wood) Still have a ways to go before I'm done. :D

When I order ( many years ago from drivetraindirect.com prior to know IH8MUD comunity ) my Presision Gears I never take the care to see what I get printed in the ring .. so I keep at home 2 PG boxes .. ( cost me around 250 USD ea ) I thought I need to check in my ring what kind of brand I really have.

At the end I thought there it's no way to ensure get a PG ring and pinion right now ..
