I searched and FAQ'd. What is the best battery to get? Yes I have a winch.

let the games begin

If you do a search for "battery replacement" in the 80's section there are several informative threads to read.

It's going to depend on your needs and your $$ range, post up what you are looking for a people could help you narrow it down.

Just bought a 31 series yellow top Optima, larger version of the standard Optima that is like having 1& 2/3rds batteries. Very nice and for about 230$. I run a standard yellow top in my 40 and have never had any issues with that one either,

I went with an Exide Select Orbital. I'm running just a single battery setup (for now at least) and, unlike Optima, Exide had NO concerns about me hooking the winch up to the front posts instead of the top posts. It is a bit of a stretch to get the main battery cables to the center mounted posts but it worked.

Thanks for the replies. I should have given more info.
Its a off-roader mostly, so I need an off-road battery. Was looking at Optima, but keep seeing mixed reviews on them. Also the odyssey is out of my price range.

I'll do search again, too

I bought the Optima 9040-218 yellow top from Summit Racing for $179.95 USD plus inexpensive shipping. I don't drive it everyday and my security system was killing the old battery. No problem with the optima though as it is designed for both deep cycle and strong starting.

I had to use the provided platform attachment to get the battery high enough but the terminals are where they should be and it was easy to install. An excellent battery for less than $200 delivered.

The Odyssey is just slightly more than the deep cycle Optima's (yellow tops).
It's kinda hard to say that something is out of one's price range when it won't leave you stranded off road miles from anywhere, isn't it ?

What is your price range ?

Uh, I have two batteries in my rig.

Uh, I know...
Optimas have a nasty habit of just being fine one second and dead the next.
Contrary to sill Internet hype, they're not totally sealed and will not only outgas, but evaporate as well (which is what usually leads to their death). Under the hood, in the "high" temps, they've both show evap. lose regardless of there is an actual draw on them or not.

Get one good batter and not have to worry about it ;)

Costco + Yellow Top = happiness

If it ever fails, bring it back. Period.

Lucky you :crybaby:

I live in south america so I need to purchase them in the states, bring them here by seacargo (because aircargo invoice will be more than the battery cost), wait 3 weeks until custom clears them, install them on my cruiser, travel 1200 miles to the rain forest, wait until it they fail, resort to my other two deep cycles batteries, travel back 1200 miles, find a way to send it back to Costco, get my replacement batteries, send them back here, pay shipping and custom again, travel another 1200 miles to see them damaged again !!!!!! my outrage: priceless :flipoff2:

And what Fred says about using Red Tops for winching is true, this is the best way to waste them. Period

x2...where I live, I absolutely cannot have my battery fail...so I have an Odyssey (even had it shipped from SoCal), and it pencils out to be the cheapest battery money I have ever spent. I'm tired of exchanging batteries at Costco. I wouldn't have anything else, as I am too old to mess around with "cheap" anymore. The Odyssey turns out to be "inexpensive" instead. What price peace of mind?;)

Never heard of that "nasty habit". Perhaps on the red top that has been used for deep cycle applications.

Never had a problem with my yellow top or blue top for 3500 miles through the Mexican desert or countless other trips in extreme heat.

Blue top keeps the refer and stereo going for 3 days at a stint then will usually start the vehicle. If not, yellow does the job and all charge back up nicely.

Get two batteries or get a portable jumper.

Even a "good battery" will eventually let you down.

Shoot, just do a simply search and this site and you'll hear about it.
A post a couple above this mentions it.
You're one of the lucky ones.
Out here in Southern Arizona, a couple people have good a fair life out of their Optima's but, by and far, most of them fail within two years, usually a little less.
When they fail, they just flat quit. Start the vehicle to go to work and everythings fine. Try to start it to come home or go to lunch and it's flat dead, nothing.
That's 100% typical of how the Optima's die.
The Odyssey's simply don't do that. Towards end of life (usually around 8+ years) they simply start getting weaker. Very easy to notice and easy to test for and, when they start getting weaker they still have a lot of life left in them.
