When I had my new rig serviced at Lexus, they told me that i would need a new battery soon and tried to sell me a factory one.

I declined because I figured there were better options.

Which batteries are you guys trusting your cruisers with these days?

Don't overthink it.

I had a Duracell Group 27F, it was about $100 from Sam's Club. I got about 3-4 years out of it. FWIW the OEM Toyota battery had lasted 3-4 years before that.

Most recent was a generic Group 27F from the local auto parts shop... I needed one on a Sunday and they were the only place nearby that had one available. $120. It's been 6 months and it's running fine, though I'm pretty sure the battery was fully drained when I got it because it was a SLOW crank to start the first time and the truck struggled to idle above ~400 RPMs until the battery had charged for a few minutes, with the voltmeter in the dash sitting around 10V until the RPMs jumped.

Anyway, just buy a group 27f and if at any point you start feeling like it's slow cranking just go replace it. You'll be surprised once you put a new fully charged battery on the truck how quickly it turns over the first few starts

The seven year warranty on the Lexus batteries, and long life, has made them worthwhile. Particularly between free replacement and pro-rata it’s been great for me with a couple of older sedans and two LXs.

The original OEM Panasonic’s were outstanding. If you have a good service adviser or mechanic they can help the battery show bad when testing marginal, saves coming back with a totally dead one later.

Which ever one you choose get it done sooner than later. Tough getting in the truck with a dead battery.

I’ve had good luck with the Interstate brand batteries.

Same here. Use costco for my batteries. Type 27 is less then $100 and their warranty is great.

My 25 month old oem Toyota battery was not holding a charge and in order for the dealership to warranty it out they would have needed to run a bunch of tests on it while it was still in the car. And anything over 24months is only a prorated credit. Saved time and money simply getting a new one from Costco.

Navistar makes an AGM battery in 27F and X2 power rebrands it, they are sold at batteries plus bulbs stores. That is what I’m running in my GX.

Any AGM needs external charging or modifications to the vehicle to meet the required charging profile.

As interested as I am in the rebranded navistar, for that reason I’m sticking with lead acid.

I have a 2010 BMW 335D that I bought an AGM for. With the Carly app, I was able to register the battery as an AGM and the car changes its charging profile.

Anything like this on Toyotas?

As @linuxgod says, don't overthink or over compensate. You can certainly do worse than a standard lead acid batt. Most any will last 4-7 yrs without any fuss. Because the electrical system is designed for it.

Anything else, AGM lithium or whatever may be higher quality, but will live a compromised life because the OEM charge profile is setup for lead acid. Most other types may also not take well to underhood heat.

There are higher capacity lead acids. Group 31s can readily fit.

There are also higher quality lead acids, with desirable AGM like qualities. Checkout this thread on Deka lead acids.

That would be awesome if it’s an option, and I’d bet widely discussed if so. I haven’t heard about such a thing yet.

I haven't replaced the battery in my 570 yet, but I just bought a couple batteries for my v2500 6.2 from tractor supply. Most cca's for the price and already warrantied one due to operator error with zero hassle.

I replaced the battery in my FJ cruiser with a used H8 agm from a 7 series bmw. 1000 cca's I believe. I can leave my FJ for months at a time and it always starts without question. I love that giant bmw battery. Coincidentally, it also eliminated the constant acid buildup on the terminals in that truck.

After pricing and checking out warranties and if anything has to be reprogrammed, go with Lexus very good battery, see if the dealer has any service offers.

I don’t recall any reprogramming being required.

Technically supposed to do an AC servo motor initialization after battery disconnect. Many people don’t though. Also depending on your driving habits the backup lines for the rear camera can take a while to work, as the steering sensor learns the range and some other stuff I don’t know. That’s not really programming though.

Corrosion is actually an indication of battery management issues. Corrosion on the positive terminal is due to overcharging. More likely is corrosion on the negative terminal due to systemic undercharging. Or car sitting too long between use.
