anyone ever run a michelin LTX AT2?

...I live in atlanta and 90% of my time is spent on pavement. other 10% is in the NC mtns. don't need tires yet but trying to find something bigger than what I currently have and a little more trail ready. currently have 275/60/18...thinking about going to 275/70/18's.

I haven't had much experience but I think for the Atlanta area that would be a great tire. Consider a Nitto, they are the best mix between a street tire and A/T IMO.

That being said, a 295 series should run about 3cm wider per tire; about 1/2 of that protruding wider per side, equaling a total of 3cm (or just over 1 inch) in total width increase. I'm not sure if I'm missing something when you're saying he'd be 4" wider...
Spresso is talking about the wheel size; not the tire width. And actually it is closer to 5" since the proposed wheels are 9" wide.

I'm here in the ATL and can relate; 90% on road and 10% off road in the GA or NC mtns. I've had BFG's on all of my rides until putting Toyo OC on my 100. Never had any complaints with the BFG's but they were a little noisy even when rotated every 4k and MPG's went down on account of the weight (and this was on rigs smaller/lighter than the 100). This is to be expected.

I honestly don't think you can go wrong with Nitto's or Toyo. The treads, weight, etc. of both are very similar. You see a lot of 4x4 rides here in Atlanta with both makes and there's a reason. Next time I need tires I'll likely switch to Nitto's just to try them out. It's just hard to justify MT or a super aggressive tread while sitting in your DD commuting on I-285 or I75 or I85. But they are sexy...

Peter, those wheels will net you near 4" wider track width compared to stock...is that what you want?

yeah it is what i'm after actually. I currently have the 16x8 steelies with 265x75 KM2s as at the time 285s weren't legal for me. Technically the 295x70x18 won't be legal (by 14mm), but i really do want it wider and taller given i'm hoping to send the beast down to Darren for a lift and suspension upgrade.

I'll be keeping the 265s and the steelies in case i need to swap them back for legal reasons!
cheers
peter

2000UZJ and GaFJC... thanks for the info, I will definitely consider the Nitto's. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

On s separate subject, have you guys ever had unusual tire wear? Right now I'm getting bad inside tire wear, front and back. The guys at ACC seemed s little confused by it as well but overall seemed to think it was a balancing/ alignment issue. I'm normally crazy about tire pressure so don't think that's it. Any suggestions of a good dependable tire shop you guys have used??

I've had good luck with folks at Kaufman but the chains can be hit or miss.

I've also used Christian Bros in Gwinnett with excellent results over the past decade.

Either way, Sounds like a 4 wheel alignment is order. ACC has a few diff tire/alignment shops they sub out to and trust. FYI once the tires start a wear pattern they cannot be changed.

What part of town are you in?

Live in Smyrna and work by Perimeter - your last comment...what do you mean? Since they've already worn they cannot be aligned now to correct the problem?

Once a bad tire pattern has started it's very hard to correct it. I had severe cupping on my A/T's due to a horrible (I mean horrible) alignment. I never could correct it. I had Butler Tire in Buckhead re-align my truck. I wouldn't hesitate to get an alignment at Butler. Though it is pricey..

The best way I can explain is the tire "learns" the bad habit and cannot unlearn it. That said vibrations can sometimes be balanced out. Other times cupping or broken belts are major issues you have to live with until you replace. I've found balancing and rotating every 5 to 6 k miles helps a lot.

It would behoove everyone that is in the 285/75R18 tire size camp to keep pinging Nitto to offer this size in their line-up...especially the Terra Grappler model.

Strange how Toyo offers this size but their corporate owned Nitto counterpart doesn't.

Go to their website and make the request: Contact Us

I do this about once/month...they always politely reply and thank me for my input/request and promise to e-mail me if/when they offer this size.

Squeaky wheels get the...well tires in their size...hopefully :D

Dan, what does 285/75/18 come out to in inches?...Or did I miss it further up in the thread?

Yep...nominally speaking the 285/75-18 is a 285mm width tire, or 11.22 inch SAE equivalent, and 35" in diameter. Each brand and model will deviate a bit from "nominal". Both Goodyear and Toyo are 35"+ on paper...not sure what they really measure with a tape measure.

I have two sets of wheels: One set is mounted with Goodyear MT/R and the other set is with Toyo Open Country AT: Both are 285/75-18. After running stock, 285/75-16, 315/75-16 and for the past 3+ years the 285/75-18 I found what I like and what works best on the 100 platform and out here in the West. Not to say it should be everyone's choice but through a thorough process of elimination trying the other sizes quite extensively this one is the best for me.

Its time to replace the Toyo ATs (again) and I'd sure like to install a set of Nitto TG's for my "AT" set.

aah ok. yeah they are different on the website to the spreadsheet calcs.
i wonder how i'd explain that to the nice Policeman !!
if i'm going to be over i may as well get the 35s that are on Nates buildup thread!
