Simo, you need to stop going to Rausch Creek and come out west and actually EXPLORE.

Spresso had the OC A/Ts in that size.

I would LOVE to do that... hopefully one day I can convince the better half to hop in the car with the kids and head out west for some real exploring. It's not for the lack of interest on my part, that's for sure!

Spresso, any thoughts?

Does anyone here have experience with the 285/75R18 Toyo Open Country A/T tires? How do they compare to the Nitto Terra Grapplers?
I've only had/have the Toyo's so I can't make a comparison with the Nitto. They're a great AT, seem to stick to most surfaces including the bit of ice and snow we have here at the moment. They have their limitations in mud being an AT but only what you'd expect of an AT. They do wear quite quickly, but I think a big factor in that is driving style so if you're constantly pushing them hard round bends they scrub away. I think I might get 25k out of mine.

I've got 1600 miles on my ATs now(tiny 285/60s) I like them even more from when I was super excited to get them. They're really smooth on the road, and dont make things interesting in the rain like the MTs.

Macneill has been running them on his 100 for quite some time now(16"/33" tho) with some trail running. Hey he had, and lost, and regained enough traction to blow his diffs and screw up the tc!

Ran through two complete sets of 285/75-18" Toyo AT tires. Other than being a little anemic in the looks department they did very, very well in all conditions given they are AT tread.

But...be prepared to only get about 20K out of them. And if you like to replace tires at 3/16" remaining tread then its more like 16k miles. And this is one of the sizes that are NOT covered by Toyo's treadlife guarantee. And they are very heavy especially for an AT tire. However they share the same carcass as the Toyo MT tire so they have very tough sidewalls and overall construction.

OTOH my current Goodyear MT/R Kevlar tires of the same size are now at just over 20k miles with more to go before I renew them. And these perform incredibly well in rain, light snow, ice, packed snow along with all other trail and pavement conditions you'd travel over. No they're not as quiet as the Toyo AT...but very quiet relative to being a true MT tread.

I have at least 20k on my Toyo MTs, still a bunch of tread left. They're not new but they've taken me from NH, FL, CA and everywhere inbetween....including some wheeling ;)

Strangely enough the Toyo MT wears considerably longer than their AT

I had over 30k on my Nitto Terra Grapplers (AT) with at least half tread left maybe a bit more....I did a 5k rotation for all 5 tires as well so that made big difference.

Nitto is owned by Toyo. The Nitto TG, as you and others have attested, are a super tire choice. My buddy Jack has over 30k miles with considerable tough off-road use thrown in too (315/75 16").

Too bad Nitto, like their parent company Toyo offers, doesn't offer tire choices in 285/75 18" size.

Ya, but the 295/70's are pretty sweet.

What made you change to the Kevlars?

Toyo AT's weren't wearing very well; @ $300+ per each that was a bit of an insult to tell you the truth and Toyo could care less based upon my communication to them about this issue:rolleyes:.

And the GY MT/R Kevlar tires had gotten rave reviews from all-points users especially on snow and ice where the prior MT/R sucked to put it plainly :). And unlike the Toyo MT tires of the same size the tread width on the GY is considerably more narrow and to my liking; not to mention the weight savings difference for the GY Kevlars.

Yeah I think your tires are about 5lbs lighter each.

The Toyo OC AT in the 285/75 18" is 70lbs. I don't know what my MT/R's weighed new. I'd venture to say your Toyo OC MT in the same size are closer to 80lbs each?

they are 80 I believe, Joe hates me. I meant your GYs are 5lbs lighter than your ATs you had, the GYs are only 65 each.

This thread is exactly the info I've been searching for for some time......I have an '03 LX in stock form. Am I interpreting most of you to say that the 305/65-18 BFG is too tall/wide and will rub with a stock setup where the 295/70 - a slightly taller tire - will not? I'm looking for a set of tires to put on a second set of 18's I have, and I'd like to have something that's more aggressive. I found a good used set of 305's, but I don't want to get them if they're going to rub or cause other problems. (I've been focusing on my 80 for a while, but I suppose it's about time to look into "adjusting" my AHC to accommodate some larger shoes.....) Thoughts?

The Nitto Terra G's in the LT295/70R18 are big tires. I think someone posted a pic of the Nitto label where they call them 35x11.5's. That said, they're a great fit on the LC. My LC is not yet lifted and at intermediate steering angles with the suspension loaded I get a slight rub on the rear of the well. I believe the lift will cure this, if not trimming about 1" of the plastic liner where it sticks out at the elevation of the boards will cure it. Road noise is greater than the Duelers they replaced but not objectionable to the :princess:. I've had them on both snow and extreme rain and they performed like a champ. The truck cuts through standing water like a knife. Offroading has been minimal thus far so you'll have to get opinions from others if that's a paramount concern.

I've followed my buddy locrwln/Jack in his 80, with his TGs, for thousands and thousands of miles of on-trail miles. They are an incredible tire especially considering they, in 315/75R16 size, are a D rated tire. I really thought we'd see a sidewall and/or tread/carcass puncture given some of the trails we explore...but no such issue ever presented itself. They aren't quite the 'ticket' for deep greasy mud but find me an AT that is ;)

I'd run them if they were made in 285/75R18"!

Not only did they hold up incredibly well to the abuse, they always stayed balanced, can't beat that. Nothing like beating the crap out of a tire off road for 700+ miles and driving home at 80+ mph without issue (did that multiple times). I was running very heavy, so they earned their keep with me.

Jack
