as others have said, if the spindle if off it should pop out easily unless it is stuck in the 3rd member or jammed into the axle housing from the bend

is there any debris inside the knuckle housing (the bowl)

you could improvise something to pull it out braced against the knuckle housing with some slotted L channel steel and some ready rod, or just reef on it with a crow bar ;).

by the way in toyota terms the outer axle assembly flashlight is known as a birfield or birf.

A crow bar hey? . . . . Hmmmmm . . . . . I’ll have to think about that. I’m at a disadvantage because I have the axle sitting on two stumps in the basement. If I yank to hard the whole thing might come tumbling down. The only thing in the knuckle housing was very soupy grease mixed with oil. Most of it drained out by the time I had everything off, so there wasn’t much of anything to wipe up. As for the birf, it has smooth play in all directions except when I lift it straight up. It catches on something, but just a little force will allow it to move all the way up. I’ll have to wait for the weekend before I can work on it again.

Thank you for all of your help and suggestions. After I recover a portion of my losses I’d sure appreciate some more input and advice for my next endeavor: To purchase another 80 series. While waiting to be in a position to buy one I’d like to collect information. For example: I have the EF1 engine in my Land Cruiser, but I’m told that a better engine was designed after the EF1. That’s good information. Does anyone have other little tidbits like that that you think I should know, or that I should consider? (I know if I do my own homework I’ll find all the answers, but I’d like to ask you guys first - and some things you just can’t get from a book). Thanx . . . Very much

If its a gas engine and a 92, you have the 3FE engine. In 93 they changed to the 1FZE engine. In mid 95 they upgraded the computer and added the OBD II interface.

I personally (and I did twice) would go for a 96-97 model. because of the OBDII and faster computer. If you ever want to supercharge your truck, you will find better results with the newer computer. You can troubleshoot issues and monitor data real time with the OBDII interface and that OBDII reader/scanner will work on any car (at least in the US) built after 96.

Go to the FAQ and look in the General section for the newbie guide. That is a link to Christo Slee's site and there is a good description on the differences between years.

I would ask Semlin to tell you the details of getting a US truck into Canada. A lot easier than the other way around. Probably more of a selection down here. BUT you have the deisels up there.

Good Luck

all you people are crazy that 80 was fine to begin with its a toyota throw the oil pan back on and drive it sidways down the road!

(2oyo2a sry to hear of your loss. Someone with half your determination will get a mighty fine cruzah.)

p.s. find one that was factory locked at the diffs!!!

2oyo2a,
Sorry to hear you gave up but after hearing you comments on the front birf I think you have done the right thing.
If I remember correctly you are in Canada.
Find yourself a nice diesel.

Here in Canada the parts and knowledge of 80 series is hard to come by as they are a rare vehicle. . . . . . the Rookie

Where in Canada?

Thanx . . . . all you Cruiser experts . . . . for your condolences.

I don't mean to throw you off . . . but . . . . I have a question: Will a 94 housing and tcase bolt up to my a440f tranny. I'm told the 94 has a viscous slip t-case so it's a different model to what's on mine right now. Do you think the two will join up?

Does anybody live in Rancho Cordova, California?

Assuming you have a line on an 80 series, you might start a new thread titled, "Can someone check 80 in Rancho Cordova, CA", or something like that. That way you will be more likely to get the help you need.

No . . . unfortunately I don't have a lead on another 80 Series. I just have another option I was considering.

I'd go for a 1HD-T. I'm plenty happy with mine except it's so boring. Nothing ever seems to want to break down after you get it fixed right.
