Rusty AF

Starting the roof, she was bogged and painted over and sold to me, NO love, so im gonna have to show her some love.

About a year passed and rust started oozing through above the drivers side door, then in another spot and another so after some time decided to peel back the roof and see what was inside.. she was a bit rusty we could say. Gonna cut as much as possible out, fish oil the s*** outa it and fibre glass it up.

Already had the engine re built so now comes the body work 👍

Just make sure to treat the inside!
How would u treat it? 🙂

I cut most major rust out of her and got rid of most surface rust, the under roof had big rust holes in it and i cut back to good steel and wire brushed surface rust, it seemed to start from the middle gutter skin to both inner and outer layers of roof, so i assume there wasnt a huge amount on the inside of the inner roof.. if u get me, all seemed to be on the outside of the inner, and the inside of the outer, most of the gutter rusted onto the faces of those 2 skins, but i cut out what i could, got off all surface rust, and cleaned all gutter rust back to bear metal and pumped it all with fish oil, and vaccumed out any rust dust or crumbs that fell inside(or what i could) then fish oil. Alot of it.

The passenger side pillers were just as bad or worse, so full of bog all the way down to the door hinges and ontop of the bog was piles of rust from the roof. It got worse the more i attacked it until there was no rust or old bog left, Its actually been fun knowing how bad it was and how clean it is becoming. Just got to stay ontop of it now!

Ill send some photos of the piller

Wow was that some hardcore upper rust. It’s interesting how in different areas what gets affected. Mines all down below as I’m in CT, USA and the truck has been in New England for 18 years. Someone oiled sealed the frame but as I have been patching it the stuff peels off in sheets. Nasty.
What made you go w/ fiberglass over welding?

The town i bought it was on the beach on the south coast Australia, who knows how long its been dealing with ocean spray, might have been there its whole life... have you got any photos of your rust? Under side of my drivers door was pretty nasty had to cut of the whole corner and glass it back up.

I dont know how to weld haha, and i thought fibre glass wont rust, solid and waterproof, the only place water would get in atm is on the bottom side of my gutter, i need to sikaflex it up or something, i wanna be able to apply fish oil up there in the future so i might drill few holes up the bottom side of my gitter and plug it up with sika, and every few months unplug it and soak it with the fishoil and plug it back up. Idk yet ill send photos if i do that

Heres the door😄

A work in progress... both inner and outer. Had to pull the body mount brackets and added new hardware. I learned to weld as I did it... luckily I took to it fast enough. Had tons of guidance from a few great welders here on mud. Hobart 140 mig, got it reconditioned for a smidge over $400. Well worth it.
Your repairs do looks really nice. I don’t know enough about fiberglass to metal over time. Anything is better than what was there.
My driver floorboard had holes too and before buying a welder I cut, cleaned, bent some sheet to fit the floor added sealer around edges and then sheet metal screwed it in place.

That doesnt look like a fun spot to have rust, before the roof repair i did get water sitting on my drivers floor after a storm, i better have a look amd make sure nothing is happening down there.... nothing a bit of glass cant fix 😉
I might have to invest in a mig one day, would be very nice to know how to weld!

Thanks ive had my dad giving me a hand, he has always loved building s*** with fibre glass, he has built a few boats in his day, and currently working on one now in the shed, a bit of a project... just like the 60 is... hes always got a few tips and tricks for me along the way. ive still got to do a bit more work on the drivers door, ill send some pics😁
