beefed 80 axles vs. 60/14b

Christo, you seem very hard on stuff. If you were to do a fullbodied LC, not doing any EXTREME rock crawling, but Tellico stuff with a heavy foot, would you stick with stock axles, or would you go 1-tons?

If you wheel Tellico with a skinny pedal your full body would last one trip. I also can't think of too much at Tellico that would warrant this axle swap. 80's are pretty much doing every trail now with lower 2 having a bypass. Even doing guardrail... not the bypass, the rock, he pulled cable near the top but made it half way up the rock.

Alk,

Traction at Tellico is not all that great. I am willing to bet YOU could survive a good while on just stock birfs.

Stop web wheeling and actually go wheel.

Tellico is fun as hell, but it really isnt that challenging. An 80 on 35" trxus made it through all the "hard" trails at GSMTR, granted he winched a lot on schoolbus in the rain, but he ran it all.

Im sure he has stock birfs. Breaking stuff like axles isnt that expensive, if it starts to bother you, upgrade. If you arent breaking, dont upgrade.

12 would definitely claim glass...schoolbus and helicopter pad are likely to claim some also. I did upper 2 with mine, it was rough but nothing like the 12, guardrail, schoolbus, and heli pad.

So an 80 on 35's did guardrail, helicopter pad, schoolbus, and trail 12?

I was with one on 37s and stock birfs that did all those trails with me.

Since this thread was about axles lets keep it that way, he did great, no breakage from the birfs or other axles...

Tellico is not kind to glass and bodies on wagons.

yup, that was point a few posts up... that's why I'm cutting my body up:)
And not worrying about the axles until they start breaking.

I'll find the thread showing the 80 going up guardrail and link it here.... but yes, an 80 has done all the trails at Tellico.

edit: Al's right, it's about axles so i won't link the thread.

Knowing that I know now I would have put ProRock 60's in the Shortbus. That is if I did not have a shop and wanted to explore the limits of the Toyota stuff. However for us it was a journey to explore what the outcome would be. Cost a lot of $'s to get there, but that is school money.

I am fixing the Shortbus in the next month and it is going up for sale. Either Ebay or list it on our site. Time for someone else to have fun with it.

Tellico is a place with low traction, not like out west where the rocks are like sand paper..With out traction it makes it hard to break birfs / axles.

Throw some longs in, they have life time warrenty...At tellico, like what has been said above you should be more worried about your body, not your axles...

But FIRST....lock & gear the front and pop your first birf, your still a virgin til you do...

I'll take your word for it lowtide, I don't mind replacing stuff when I'm home with everything I need. Fixing a birf on the trail isn't fun on a mini, and isnt any better on an 80, so I'd rather avoid that...but you're right about traction at tellico, it is very lacking, so it takes lots of skinny pedal if you dont have crawler gears, which means lots of bouncing and binding which can break. I guess with a crawler box, beefed 80 axles would probably be enough...I guess I should just try some s*** first and stop being a pussy about it.

Now ya got it!! :D

Crawler gears are nice for a few little places in tellico but are not needed for the most part. There is just so little traction and need for wheel speed that crawler gears arnt a must, I would re-gear your diffs though...it will be night and day.

I have broke stockers and last time up I broke a first generation long...

All of them broke backing up, full lock and up hill.....gotta stop doing that ;)

30 splines are going in next, I have seen woody first hand beat the snot out of these things along with Mike H on lower 2 hammer on them...

as far as I know they have yet to be broke.

...LC axles under a mini are pure beefy.

This statement is funny. Toyota stuff is Toyota stuff. It can be made to work but you can’t beat it too hard. I personally am thinking of taking the plunge to the dark side eventually…

Run what you got, if you haven’t broken anything, you obviously don’t wheel enough. If you start breaking things, start figuring out a long term plan, think, parts that will outlast your truck and that you will not outgrow.

I really didnt feel the need for crawler gears at tellico for the above reasons. You really dont have to worry about the tires slipping then hooking up and breaking stuff, they just keep slipping. I played around a little on the comp course at rausch and the traction there was nuts, you just pick a line and idle up it. I could see breaking under traction like that easy because you literally cant slip a tire.

My truck is pretty much setup to bust birfs now, its got pig inners so the birfs are definitly the fuse.

I was just trying to show how weight of a rig plays a large part in what/how often you break stuff. I'm afraid that I'll end up like christo and break longs often and wish I had just gone with 1-tons.

IS Christo breaking 30 spline longs? I havnt heard ANYONE who has yet?

Yes, there have been a few broken 30 splne Longs, mostly due to the first production of them mixed with some improper installation ;p Bobby still warranties them because he is a pimp  Search on pirate for the pics.

What is this slippage doesnt not equal breakage??? It will stop spinning eventually  Its like saying that its not the fall that hurts you, its the sudden stop at the end. Roasting the tires in second is still very hard on your drive train  Something WILL catch when your tires heat up or you slide into a rock wall or when your front tires hop 3 feet over the top and then slam down while at 5000RPM, or when you get off your period and decide that winching is only for when you break halfway up the hill:lol::lol: Seriously, were not riding dirt bikes! And were not mud riding! Yours tires will catch eventually

Yes I like to crawl and embarrass Heeps with V8s and one tons, but there is often a need for wheel speed here in the "slippery South"

I also trailer my truck beacuse ANYTHING can break! Yes I drove it 1300 miles on the Ultimate Adventure, but one day youll have to man up and decide to go from weekend wheeler/DD/ camping rig to trying to get the most from Toyota parts and build a 2700lb buggy on FJ80 axles, propane, and 42"s (and lots of gearing(for still under 9 grand:idea:))

THAT is what I want :grinpimp: But that is the fun part about the internet, you can then say what you want and then go winch up hills, and I can say what I want and then build a sweet buggy and go up hills (crawlin or haulin )

Good luck :D:D:D:D

I'm worried about the same thing... I'm starting to go thru stock birfs every time I go out. Mostly because I'm stock geared at the moment and I'm not afraid of the go pedal. My 80 will eventually look like the one Unbreakable is building, but I still wonder if it's worth the time and money to upgrade the axles before I start blowing my very short supply of $$.

I guess I could build my axles and if I start breaking them, give them to my wife for her 4Runner... (she get's all the cool stuff.)
