When you get new bearingsn do you need to clean off the oil film?
When you clean used bearings with parts cleaner, do you rinse them off with water?
Syn vs dino grease, what does syn grease do to bearings that dino can't? Worth the $$$?

geez, dontcha know there is a serious obsession on this forum with synth, $$ be darned...?

No need to clean off protective oil.(Just keeps em from rusting)
No need to wash off mineral spirits with water.
No need to use synth grease. (Unless you like spending money)

1. No need to clean brand NEW bearings - adequately grease the bearings [so grease is forced in one side and out the other] & install
2. NEVER rinse bearings with water, PERIOD! If you are worried about the residual "parts cleaner" degrading the new grease in the used bearing, you could use clean solvent, and pour / rinse the bearing w/o immersing the bearing in the solvent! You can use new grease to force out the old grease in used bearings.
3. Synthetic grease has a greater shear factor / protection, etc., over standard grease. Synthetics allows a better additive package for particular environments over dino

Well, I was told to rince with water, I am glad I asked.
Whats wrong with water and bearings other than rust?
I dried all the water out, I hope.

Rust is it. Water and Grease/oil are of opposite polarity, if there is any water on your bearing, it will prevent grease from getting to that part, granted, after you let the bearing dry, and then pack it, there is little chance this could happen, but why take any chance?
If you are concerned about any residual mineral spirits on the bearing, let it sit in the sun for a few minutes, mineral spirits is very volatile and will evaporate quickly-much quicker than water.
