So I think that I have OEM battery cables and there are odd looking connectors that go to the harness. what have you guys done to get rid of these fire hazards

I took mine to the local staelership and the replaced the fusible links with fusible cables (his words). Seems to be holding up well and it was reasonably priced.

I installed the urban land cruisers kit two weeks ago, no real complaints and an easy install.

Here are some crude pics I just took on my break, one shows the cable size and terminal, and the other shows the fuseable link replacement.
This is on an FJ60 fwiw.
