First red flag is it is a 22R...and 4wd. I think after 85 they where all 22RE on 4wds. So ask about a engine swap or they lost the EFI.
Nah, 22Rs came in vehicles way past the introduction of EFI in 85. The less-expensive models and 2wds had them way into 3rd gen trucks. Doubt the EFI has been swapped out. It likely came with a 22R and not RE.
I gotta ask out of ignorance: Why have so many of the trucks mentioned required an engine rebuild with such "low" mileage? Wouldn't these be expected to have ordinary Toyota durability?
If you're looking at the red one with the different bed, it reads that the rebuilt engine has 70K on it and not 70K on the odometer. I'm reading that to mean that the truck likely has 200K plus miles on it with a rebuilt engine that has 70K miles. Would definitely want to check on that, though.

Not terribly difficult to find the correct bed. There are enough out there if that is something you want to look into. I wouldn't shy away from a truck just because of the 22R, especially if you hate electronics. The electronics portions of 22REs are getting harder to source, and I say that from experience looking for TPS, AFMs, fuel pumps, etc. for my 85 4Runner.

Just my 2 pennies...

Barry, I got to thinking... which is never a good thing...

Have you considered a second gen 4Runner? You mentioned you wanna put a camper shell on the truck to keep your hunting stuff dry and a place to sleep. I believe you'll have enough room to sleep if you put down the seats of the 4Runner. Plus, you could build a shelf system to keep all your stuff organized. It seems that a 4Runner is much more easily sourced at a good price in better condition. Trucks are treated like trucks.

Another thought - spend a little more and get an early Tacoma. The 3.4 V6 will give double the power with only a fractional reduction in gas mileage. These are becoming easier to find at a decent price, too.

I agree w Jordon on checking out a 1st gen 4runner for everything you have talked about it would be perfect.

they look nice but i have read it is a pretty significant mileage difference and the v6 like to blow its head gasket at a young age.

Check into a 1st gen if the fuel mileage is killer. Removable top would be nice for ya.

Don't know off the top of my head on the length, and I'm not near mine right now. Sorry. Pick-n-Pull tends to have a few if you wanna check at one of those for lengths.

notha question: as far as I can tell 85 is the only year with EFI and the solid front axle. Is that true?

This is true. 85 is a great year but unless you are going to wheel it HARD then I would not pass up a good deal on an IFS truck. All depends on what you plan to do with it.

Barry I still think IFS fits what you have told me your intended use is better than a solid axle. I'd be looking for an 89 4Runner SR5 w altimeter if I were you.

I'd pass on the solid front axle. They come with a premium price, usually. An IFS rig will ride much better. Look for an 86-89 in good condition with a 4cyl and 5 speed. Pass on an automatic, as they rob the power and more difficult to work on or replace. Get as nice of a vehicle as you can find and afford. Altimeters are cool, but you can retrofit one if you absolutely must have. That's another one of those Toyota cool factor things that are more a novelty than anything.

There looks to be a nice 86 4cyl 5spd rig near me on eldoarkclassifides. Kinda high but looks nice. What is your budget for this truck (probably in here somewhere but I have not read the whole thing yet:( )
