Bang, and then there was transmission fluid rushing out like a shower head

Driving on a rocky road I have done 20 times or more and stopped to help a friend adjust his carburator. I then got back in my car to continue. Put the car in drive and started moving forward.

A huge BANG occurred and I stopped immediately. Horror filled my stomach as I looked under the rig to see tranmission fluid draining out like a shower faucet.

Turns out i clipped a rock with my differential and due to the recent rains the loamy soil didn't keep the rock in place. Instead the rock did a full rotation after clipping my diff and nailed my tramission skid plate.

I have a 6inch lift on 35's and my transmission pan is pretty high and out of the way and yet this huge rock nailed it.

Turns out the trasmission pan has spot welded supports that the skid plate bolts into. The rock hit so hard that the ripped the spot weld open and left an 8mm hole in my pan.

Luckily my group was carrying enough combined transmission fluid to replace the 5 quarts lost and we had quick set JB weld to patch the hole.

Consider the wet weather and understand that conditions change. This rock unearthed itself and nailed me.

Awesome you guys had jb on you. I love that stuff for many reasons even around my house.
Lucky day for you. Life is quirky that way. Cool story too. Great read.

Yes, definitely time for an upgraded skid plate that bolts to the frame and NOT the pan!

Great trailside repair story. Did you pull the pan, or just get it dry and clean enough to apply the JB Weld in-situ?

Where abouts in DV did this happened.
I did something similar on my LRT on Lippincott Rd on the way up...

JB weld saved the our trip as well...

Glad to hear you had the support, and were able to make it back home..

Good times....!!

at first I thought you were talking about a rock....like the size of something on a gravel road....

This was half way up steel pass leaving saline valley hot springs. Done it faster and driven harder all the time. Figures when I drive slow this happens.

We drained the pan, cleaned off the outside using gasoline then patched the hole with the pan in place.

Drain
remove skid plate (3 bolts, not 4 since one support was smashed off)
clean with gas
apply JB epoxy (quick setting)
refilled 5 quarts
drove on

Took us about 35 mins all said and done.
