Driving on a rocky road I have done 20 times or more and stopped to help a friend adjust his carburator. I then got back in my car to continue. Put the car in drive and started moving forward.
A huge BANG occurred and I stopped immediately. Horror filled my stomach as I looked under the rig to see tranmission fluid draining out like a shower faucet.
Turns out i clipped a rock with my differential and due to the recent rains the loamy soil didn't keep the rock in place. Instead the rock did a full rotation after clipping my diff and nailed my tramission skid plate.
I have a 6inch lift on 35's and my transmission pan is pretty high and out of the way and yet this huge rock nailed it.
Turns out the trasmission pan has spot welded supports that the skid plate bolts into. The rock hit so hard that the ripped the spot weld open and left an 8mm hole in my pan.
Luckily my group was carrying enough combined transmission fluid to replace the 5 quarts lost and we had quick set JB weld to patch the hole.
Consider the wet weather and understand that conditions change. This rock unearthed itself and nailed me.
