Where are you guys mounting the backup camera?

Original thought was next to the license plate bulbs, but I think the spare tire will block the wide angle view.

1999 HZJ77 with spare tire carrier.

I saw an fj cruiser with it inside the hitch at the grocery store the other day.

In the above location, the camera only catches a small fraction of the spare tire.

I’m thinking in the third brake light up high.

I've seen them mounted in all three locations mentioned. Unless you're planning to or already have one of those spare tire covers/bags, mounting it to the center of the spare tire carrier would be the route I would go down, if I felt like I needed a backup cam.

One of the many reasons why @cruiseroutfit 's rear bumper is going to be on my cruiser sometime this year, I hope.

This post shows a pre-cut hole in the spare tire mount where the axle hub would be if the wheel was mounted, for this reason. Backup cam mounting.

When I finally get my hands on a 73 it will get a Cruiseroutfit rear bumper. I think by far there the best !!
If it gets a rear camera I would prefer the it be centered and why I like the third brake light location 😎

Ended up using the license plate location. Spare tire doesn’t interfere.

Used a small 24V-12V converter for the trigger signal tapped off the left-side reverse light.

Backup lines are infinitely adjustable. Appear off-center because camera is off-center.

Very happy with the radio. ~$115 on Amazon with wireless CarPlay.

Asks a question, gets some asnwers, follows up with results and pictures! That's the way to do it!

Nice clean install. Did the camera come with the headunit or did you get it separately? If so which model did you get? How is the lower light performance?
Camera came with the head unit. Head unit is a PLZ 7” radio from Amazon (link below). The camera requires a 12V trigger signal from the reverse light. Link below to the 24V to 12V converter. Unit is small and able to fit nicely behind the rear trim panel.

So far very happy with the head unit. Very quick boot up time, connects quickly to the phone. Comes with an external mic, but the built-in mic on the head-unit is sufficient to carry on a conversation at ~45mph (max speed limit on Guam is 35mph).

I'd say the only way to improve the unit is if it had been named PZJ7 .

Looks great..keep us posted on how it goes.
