I am happy to say that I am back in the off road community. Two weeks ago I bought another '85 4Runner to take off road and up on the rocks. I has been about 6 years since I did some real hard core off roading, back then I had a '91 4runner. I was locked and lifted with many mods done just for off road. Before that I had a '85 4runner that I bought new in Dec. of '84. I build that one also and had the soft top desinged for it by Kayline.

I went back to the '85 instead of the many other choices out there. Part was cost, part was size but the biggest part was that it is a TOYOTA! It will run forever and looks good, never mind that you can take teh top off. A jeep was in the picture for a while but we would have needed a Scrambler or an Unlimited, to old and unreliable or to much money. The RockRunner as I call it, will take my wife and I up the hills with our two Goldens and all our gear, albeit a little slower than I am used to.

The rig I bought is pretty set up already. It has a new engine in it from Jasper with all the right speed mods. Clutch and tranny were replaced and rebuild at that time. Behind the tranny rests two T-cases fited with the 2.28 and the 4.7, how sweet low range is ;-) Both pumkins run 5.29's with E-lockers, the front being a high pinion style. The birfields have been replaced by the Super style ones and the brakes ugraded on the front. The rear breaks are still stock but not for long. For now it is sitting on stock springs with 2" shackle lifts front and rear, those will be replaced soon.

As for the interior the former former owner liked to travel in style, he replaced the dash with a complete SR5 unit. The seats were replaced with recovered '94 SR5 4runner seats front and rear, they are covered in new leather. Tunes are covered by Kenwood and Infinity, with comunication coming from a high end Cobra CB. The rest of the interior is pretty stock, added some heavy duty floor mats all around.

There are some things it is going to need to suit my type of off roading. Protection all around is high on the list, sliders and frt and rr bumpers will replace what is on there now. A full cage with netting on the rear will protect my wife and I and our boys. The lift with high steering is just about number one on the list. Then maybe a skeleton to tie into the bumpers for some more protection. Of course a winch is on the list with 35's. I am sure there is a ton more but this is a good start.

I will be replacing the E part of the lockers in the next few weeks with Downeys cables. I do not care for the E part, to many things that can go wrong. I have a soft top for it already, hope it is still in good shape. The other thing that I have ready to swap out is that skinny steering wheel, got a nice thick leather one from a local shop here in Denver.

Well, sorry for the long post I like to ramble. Time to go in the garage and start wrenching.

Have a great Thanks Giving........................

The factory E-locker is an awesome little device, IMO there is no need to switch to downey cables (which I hear are not a quality item) The thing you have to remember about an E-locker is that it's like a mini starter motor that drives a rod into the third to get both back wheels turning in unison (locked-up). Electric Motors need to be used often to keep them from binding up, especially if they are getting wet all the time. There are a couple of o-rings that should be inspected and replaced if you see that they are NG (keeps the moisture out) The biggest problem I used to see when I worked for Toyota was the locker motor would sieze due to infrequent use. Quick fix is to take the Actuator Motor apart and sand out the rust. As long as the Magnets inside are put back inthe right spot (polarity) it'll work just fine every time.

I may stay with the E part of the locker not sure yet. There are some parts that I would need to get for those for sure. I saw an add for a "complete" wiring set up but have not been able to reach the seller to ask some questions. I like the fact of not being dependent on an electrical system to lock me in.

We'll see where all this takes me, I will remember your advice for the future if I do go the E way.

I $3900 for it but will have to put more money into it. Thanks for the welcome

Took it out today for a little play time, works very nice but needs a lift. 31" tires and a 2" shackle lift won't do. New springs are in the near future, now I just need to figure out which company I go with.

how fast can she go

How Fast Are You AAble To Go With Those 5:29s?

I have had it up to 75 mph with room for more. It starts to shake a little at that speed so I stoped there. On my old rig I used to hit about 80mph at 4200 rpm.

Definatly not set up for speed but it will do all right on the flats. Now driving it to Moab that will be a long drive. Not to bad but not as nice as my DD. I think I may try adding a tow bar and see how my truck tows the runner. It may only be a little faster but the comfert and sound dampning will be worth it. Besides last time I hit Moad I had to repair my rear 3rd before the trip home. Extra time there and the expense of overnighting the parts alone makes it worth it.

Maybe this will be a good reason for me to buy that diesel I have had my eye on:D

I have a stock 85 4Runner with the e-locker mod. It sits on 31" BFG All Terrains. 4:10 gears.
Ran to Moab and back from Ventura, Ca this summer and at 23-24 mpg, I was happy.
Rig did real well in Moab running Golden Spike trail and a few others. Took a strap once or twice. Crawled the crack on my own!
I was impressed.
Keep the e part of that locker. Those cable conversions are rather perverse devices and you will not be happy.
Enjoy the rig!

Thanks Danny, I may still do that. I always try different things and then decide to go the other way. I still have to get a price on the cellenoids since they need to be replaced.

Sounds like you have a nice ride. Always nice when you can take your truck out on the road and back in the rocks.

Thanks for the info, I saw that one a little while ago and it looked pretty straigth forward. Problem is that I hate and I mean HATE doing electrical work on my truck or anyone elses. I always seem to fry something or another and then have to fix that too.

I also found a set that you can buy all ready to go that plugs into the locker etc. Problem is I have not heard much about it. I will find the link and post it later for peoples opinion.

Thanks again for the info.
