I have a 1980 B diesel in my fj45 that I transplanted it also has a 5 speed and living in the mountains wont cut it for this truck.

Just wondering if turbo's for the 3B will also work for the B also or is there a favorite for the B motor ?

Ah yes I plan on running 33'' tires

Advice ?
Thanks

Tried a search? There must be about 28000 threads on turbos for B engines.

The B does not have piston cooling oil jets. It is not as good a candidate as the 3B for a turbo. This does not mean it is no good, just run less boost and it should be fine.

I run a T3 turbo/intercooler setup with my B. I boost up to 20 PSI and so far no issues.

Definitely wakes the engine up.

 20 psi! How long you been doing this? I am sure the engine can handle it but from my understanding the lack of piston cooling is a deterant, maybe not if you have been running that much boost for prolonged time...

good to know:hhmm:

I would think one of the smaller turbos guys use on 3B's would work well, given the smaller engine 3L vrs 3.4L.

As for the piston cooling, how high boost do the 2H stand before problems. That would be a good indicator of what the B might take.

The turbo is on a B that I overhauled 18 months ago. Been running the higher boost for close to a year. Bit of an experiment I guess.

The EGT's dropped way down once I started boosting more.

Nate

more boost=more air=cooler temps. Did you port the precup openings? What are your EGT's at load going up a steep hill? Did you drive up the boost to lower the egts or did you also increase fuel?

Did you show a build on MUD?

Maybe my B will get a turbo:hhmm: It is in a 40 so just 10 psi would be adequate for my use.

Thanks for the info:beer:

Precups weren't ported. Increased fuel on the pump. On a long steep hill in fourth (H41), the EGT's will eventually get to 1250-1300 degrees if I keep my foot to the floor. The intercooler is also key to the lower EGT's.

My BJ40 was a two year project...started a build thread on MUD but something happened a while back and lost my posts.

BTW, I'm running heavy 37" Fedima tires so need power. :)

Nope. T3 from a Volvo and intercooler from a Mitsubishi Evo7. It's big. :)

Nate

Yep... just don't overwork the cooling system and it will work beautifully.

In fact, if you decide to put a turbo on the B, it will respond better due to higher compression.

I'm in the process of installing a turbo on my 76 cruiser b diesel.i bought this kit from Spector off road in ca.it came with turbo manifold oil cooler but no intercooler or waste gate.any pics of yours or advice on how to proceed.is an intercooler needed.the turbo says t04
