It is quite common to use the most recent repair manual. When you tight the bearing cap bolts (B/2B/3B Diesel) you should be very careful with the manuals.

For this family diesel engine Toyota published several manuals. Widely available at least 3 versions: 1977, Aug 1980, 1994.
Friend of mine broke several bearing cap bolts using the torque recommendation from the 1994 Manuals (20 kg m or 196Nm).
We’ve spent some time to understand the situation.

Surprise, but the manuals have a different torque recommendation

The reason is simple. Toyota had several crankshaft bearing bolts during B/2B/3B production.
12mm-1.25 bolt 90910-02045 Feb1974-Jul1980
13mm-1,5 bolt 90901-13001 Aug1980-Jul1984
16mm-2.0 bolt 90109-16001 (and other pn) from Aug1984.
Unfortunately there is no additional information about types of bolts in the manual.

Each repair manual used the torque recommendations for the modern bolts:
1977 12mm - up to 11.2 kg m (110 Nm)
1980 13mm - up to 14.2 kg m (139 Nm)
1994 16mm - up to 20 kg m (196 Nm)

What is also interesting: BJ40/BJ42 produced in Aug, Sept 1984 had 16mm bolt; BJ61 also had 13mm before Aug1984 and 16mm after. BJ70 had 16mm only, but with the different PN during the years

May be this information will be useful for the colleagues. Especially because these bolts are NLA now

Another puzzle with the connecting rod caps for 3B.
There were two connecting rod cap bolts for 3B:
13265-58010 (08/1980-07/1988)
13265-58020 (08/1988+).

The torque recommendation is also different:
83-93Nm in the 80s Repair Manuals
118Nm in the 1994 Repair Manual.

Be careful and do not overtight the bolts

It's not so much that the manuals changed, but that the engines changed. The post 08/1988 3B is a quite different engine, technically speaking. In 1988 the B engines still in production were given a major redesign.

One easy way to check the manuals is to see which engines are bunched together. Any instance where the 3B is referred to in the same manual as the 14B or 15B will for sure be the 1988+ engine. Any manual which lumps the 3B with the 2B will for sure be for a pre-1988 engine as the 2B never received the 1988 updates. The difficulty may come where the 3B is not lumped with engines like the B or 13B which also have pre- and post-08/1988 iterations.

Just out of curiosity, do you have the 1980 manual in PDF? I can't seem to find one. I was lucky enough to find this thread just as I'm assembling my engine, may have saved me from a bad time. I was looking to see which way the arrows point on the main caps and found this thread. (arrows point to front of engine).

Unfortunately I have the 1980 manual in paper version only :(
