It is quite common to use the most recent repair manual. When you tight the bearing cap bolts (B/2B/3B Diesel) you should be very careful with the manuals.
For this family diesel engine Toyota published several manuals. Widely available at least 3 versions: 1977, Aug 1980, 1994.
Friend of mine broke several bearing cap bolts using the torque recommendation from the 1994 Manuals (20 kg m or 196Nm).
We’ve spent some time to understand the situation.
Surprise, but the manuals have a different torque recommendation
The reason is simple. Toyota had several crankshaft bearing bolts during B/2B/3B production.
12mm-1.25 bolt 90910-02045 Feb1974-Jul1980
13mm-1,5 bolt 90901-13001 Aug1980-Jul1984
16mm-2.0 bolt 90109-16001 (and other pn) from Aug1984.
Unfortunately there is no additional information about types of bolts in the manual.
Each repair manual used the torque recommendations for the modern bolts:
1977 12mm - up to 11.2 kg m (110 Nm)
1980 13mm - up to 14.2 kg m (139 Nm)
1994 16mm - up to 20 kg m (196 Nm)
What is also interesting: BJ40/BJ42 produced in Aug, Sept 1984 had 16mm bolt; BJ61 also had 13mm before Aug1984 and 16mm after. BJ70 had 16mm only, but with the different PN during the years
May be this information will be useful for the colleagues. Especially because these bolts are NLA now
