can anybody help me/give me some info on passing smog in phoenix? I just moved here and have to register my rig in AZ. IT's a 1974 FJ40 with a 350. Also would love to get to know some "cruiser folks" out here. Look foward to meeting you!

Smog in AZ

I contacted AZ Dept of Air Quality and started asking questions. i talked to a technician named John who was very helpfull. I suggest calling them and ask around.

Welcome to AZ!

Back when I had mine, a '76 IIRC (with the rat motor as well), it just had to pass the emmisions standards for that year (which were pretty loose). They didn't care what engine it had in it. My 40 burned 'regular' gas and did not come with a catalytic converter, so there was no other issues- except when I got the jackass that insisted it MUST have had a cat, got the 2 hour runaround that time. I doubt if that's changed, but it might have. The best way I've found is to simply take it in for an inspection- if it fails they will re-test it free after you fix it. That way you find out exactly what they want.

What Spike said.

Oh and make sure you get a 2-year permit :D

My understanding is that a 74 and older only has to pass the sniff test, but does not have to pass a visual under the hood inspection. It also has to pass the gas-cap test. My 72 with a 350 and no real smog equipment never had a problem passing. I think the sniff test for 74 and older is pretty lax.

Oh, and older than 67 don't have to pass anything, AFAIK

How do you do that?

Every time we smogged Claudia's '72, it was good for only one year.

2 year permits are only available for vehicles that are less than 25 years old IIRC.

1981 and newer get the IM240 test every two years. New vehicles 5 years and younger are exempt. 1966 and older are exempt and can be registered for two years. I'm not sure but I think anything getting the IM240 test can be registered for two years also. 1967 to 1980, so sorry, sniff test and pay yearly.

Howdy! I am not familiar with any year break when they do not do a visual. My 76 does get looked over every year. Technically, Arizona requires the vehicle to have all of the equipment that came on the rig from the factory. If it is a Kalifornia rig, good luck. It's OK to have a Chevy smog pump, EGR, etc, but it all has to be there, and suppposedly, working. In 12 years, I have only failed the first visit about 2 or 3 times. A little tunup work got me passed on the second trip. John

I am in Tucson and have a 1974 Fj40 with a 383 no smog equipment not even pcv. The requirements should be the same for phoenix since it is a state run program. That said, 1974 is the cut off for vehicles NOT requiring an under hood inspection, the only requirement is to pass the standards for 1974 CO and HC levels, this is very easy to do by just leaning out your carb. Ihave been through twice now with no problems. If I had gotten a 1975 Fj40 it would have to have all the required equipment for 1975 AND of course pass the standards. You lucked out with your year rig. Good luck!

I really appreciate all the advice. A guy at work told me being a 74 it might not have to pass visual, but if it fails sniff check then they can visual it also. Hopefully it will pass,if not hopefully he is wrong and I can just lean out more and test again! Hope to be legal and weelin with you AZ folks soon. THANKS TREY

Yes I was wrong on the 2 year permit. :o Only one year...

I have found that if you take it in woith out of state plates, they will test it without really recording anything into the computer. They don't put any information (address, Name, etc.) into the listing. So if you pass - great, if you fail - no big deal, just fix the problem and come back.

Then they give you your paperwork to hand carry over to the DMV office.

Just pay 'em with cash, so they can't track you down.

Good Luck - Rocky
