Hi, all. I'm sure this is all over the forum, but I'm new and never had a solid front axle before, so searching would be pointless... anyway, is this heavy buildup of grease normal or the result of some problem?

It is normal.
It is only when you start to see liquid coming out that action must be taken.
Tho by the looks of it, it may be time for a redo.
It isn't expensive to do and not difficult.
Search for "knuckle rebuild" here on the forum.
Or watch this video

to get an idea of what knuckles are, do, and how to refresh them.
Welcome and

edit:lol just realized who you are.
Enjoying the rig? You got plenty 'o help nearby.
If I were still in town, I'd come over and walk you through it.

Best edit ever!

Loving it! It's just such a great truck. I'm "baselining" it presently. Noticed the weird grease while changing front diff fluid, and greasing is coming next.

So it sounds like the rebuild can wait for a bit (I see no trace of liquid leaking), and I'll just do the routine greasing - agreed? I appreciate the video for the future, though.

Good deal!
Yeah, the grease level inside the balls can kinda be watched by looking for where the grease gets dryer near the top of the ball. If that makes sense.
Seems they may have over filled them a bit judging by the pic. But that's way better than under-or-no filling.
Good luck on baselining. It will be worth every minute and every penny!

For sure. When I did my 21 year old pickup, it transformed it into a like-new vehicle.
