Hey all,
Im doing some research to find out how much fuel I NEED to carry, and I figure the best way to determine that is to find out what the AVERAGE MPG everyone else seems to be getting weather its with an F motor, chevy or other. By taking the lowest averages of all the results posted here, I feel that I can then determine a minimum, primary, aftermarket fuel cell capacity that Ill need for my build. The dilemma is that the BIGGER the tank, the less space Ill have for gear, so finding a balance between the two is the objective.

So if you please in the name of science....
Tell me what your average MPG is on your rig.

Please include the motor type if you would.

BTW, before anyone asks...my rig is NOT RUNNING, so I can not work from my own data off my own rig.:D

Thanks for any and all participation!

Keith

I've been writing down the mileage at every fill-up for the last two years, and putting it in a spreadsheet. 1980 FJ40, de-smogged but otherwise stock 2F, stock 3.73 diffs, 33x10.5 BFG KM2 tires, hard top on and off seasonally. Corrected for tire size / odometer discrepancy, I've averaged 14 mpg on the highway and about half that off-road.

2F, RV cam, headers, DUI ignition, Holley 2bbl, 33X9.50X15 tires

Drive it hard.

average 12-14mpg, depending on load, 2wd vs 4wd, hi vs lo range, etc

That is with the hard top off. Hard top on, subtract 1 - 1.5mpg

18 mpg.

Just trying to help. :D

2F in a stock 76 de-smogged 13mpg avg.

1978 fj40 top on with average load of stuff 2f de-smogged Weber carburetor, headers 4 spd with fairey overdrive- average summer 14-15 mpg.

In the winter 13-14 mpg depending on road conditions.

Those figures are with average driving conditions, off-road or plowing through 12" to 14" of snow probably can be as low as 8-9mpg though during those cases usually try to ignore how much gas I am using.

Also keep in mind the more gear you haul the more fuel you need to haul it.

If you want really good fuel economy so you have more space for gear go diesel!:D

Hope that helps,
Josh

Great stuff!!!!!
So seems that the average is about 12-14 MPG on road driving with varying loads and set ups!?

That is GREAT info!

Ill be running an 01" vortec 5.3 and hope to do a LITTLE better as far as fuel economy is concerned as its SUPPOSEDLY a bit more efficient of a motor with a greater power to weight ratio in a cruiser (FJ40).

Based on these numbers, I SHOULD be able to get about 180- 210 miles per tank on a 15 gal tank with all of YOUR drive train set ups. Thanks for the time and info gents. This really helps a great deal in my decision. In my FJ62, I only got about 150-160 miles per tank, so even this is an improvement.

Id love to do MORE fuel of course, but I also have to think about gear ill be carrying too and bed and cab set up. A 20 gal. tanks quickly eats up a LOT more space.

I get about 9mpg.

However, reading the sig on this causes me some greater concern!!!!
What gives with this my friend?

9 MPG with a vortec!?!?!?

There are two completely different vortecs, the early vortecs have a head/intake combo known as vortec heads (the original use for the name) which were of a fast burn design to extend the production life of the small block a little longer while the LS1 was being designed. Then the 5.3 vortecs and such from 00's and up (start years around that time) are LSx based motors sharing little to nothing with SBCs preceding them. They were called Vortec still as it fit the truck/suv naming conventions. Blazers and such from the time frame have a 4.3 liter V6 also called a vortec. I'm assuming he has an earlier vortec headed motor instead of the LSx based given the use of 350 over 5.7 liter.

I went from 8 to 12 MPG after cleaning the tank, changing cables and bougies.
FJ40, original 2F engine.

Pretty good summary.

I have an early 350sbc that I put vortec heads on with a holley projection fuel system. I also have a performance cam in it. All of that, combined with super swampers and a heavy foot doesn't do much for gas mileage. It sure is fun, though.

Gas Mileage

From years of driving Land Cruisers, the one thing that is consistent is gas mileage has always been between 12-14 mpg. Some times less than 12 but generally not much better than 14.

WHEW!!!
You scared the crap outta me with that my friend!
Im glad that I got that clarified.
Hopefully then, my set up will be a bit more fuel friendly.
