909 will be the first to vouch that I do NOT drive fast on the highway, and that makes a big difference in cruiser mileage, 6 or 8 cyl. An early vortec 350 that had never seen the high side of 10 got 14mpg following me from Bakersfield to Stockton for the 45 run some years back.

My 'new' ride sports 235x85x16 [32" nominal] with 4:11s and just pulled 15mpg on a 160 mile trip with 100 of the miles in the dirt. This is the BEST on-off road mileage I have ever seen in a cruiser. But it's an F, so that doesn't help you much.

HAHA. I drive like an old woman as well. However, doing the drive from Reno to Death Valley and back in my FJ62 was a NIGHTMARE trying to FLOG that thing up the grades. A little TOO old woman like IMO. That was when the Vortec swap was decided on in hopes that Ill be able to access trails further away comfortably, at highway speeds and HOPEFULLY with better mileage.

IIRC, the stock tank in a 76 had a capacity of 16.8 gal?
