Travis, congratulations to both you and Michelle. I'm not sure if I mentioned this before, but with the medical process Julia and I went through we ended up with twins, a boy and a girl. They were introduced to camping at a very young age of two months. They grew up with camping, and both are still avid campers at the ripe old age of 25 (will be 26 the end of May). I can still picture them laying there in the little plastic "seats" on top of the picnic table just absolutely fascinated by the tree tops gently moving in the breeze.

My point in this rambling is to say, don't be afraid to introduce your new addition to the family to the outdoors at a very young age. You'll never regret it. Matthew and Jessica are the quiet and shy type around people, but when it comes to the outdoors they are the ones among their age group that really know their way around.

By the way, Gladstone is just 60 miles north of me. I don't know much about custom knife makers, and never had heard of Shane Sibert. So I looked him up online. Yes, he is in Gladstone. On his homepage he states that he's so far behind in his orders, about a year, that he's currently not taking any orders until he's caught up.

This post is getting a bit long, but since you are into knives I've got a story for you about knives, steak knives made from elk shin bones.

Probably almost twenty years ago I went to Eastern Oregon on an elk hunt with some friends. While there we ran into a guy who lived nearby where we were hunting in a little wide spot in the road named Seneca. This guy grew up very close to where my friends and I lived here close to the town of Albany, and knew people that my friends knew.

So, after spending time talking, he told us about his elk shin bone steak knives and invited us to come to his place to see them. The handles were deer and elk antler sections, the blades were shin bones split, dried, and then shaved to uniform thickness and then shaped. He used tendons from deer and elk shins to bind the blade to the handle.

Then he would take deer antlers, cut slots in the beams for the knives to fit into, and either configure them to hang on the wall, or set on a table top as a center piece. The workmanship was astounding. I wish I could have afforded a set, but as I remember his asking price for a set of six, with the antler base, was $600. Too much for my income. I was wishing I had a camera with me as the guy was a real craftsman with wood also.

Congradulations !!!

Travis,

Congradulations on the up coming birth, it will be the most amazing thing you have ever experienced, It was for me.
I found this thread just the other day and enjoyed reading and checking out the pics, it has bought back fond memories of my own travels over the years.
I love seeing old trucks still travelling the country, many people wouldn't dream of getting out there without a flash new $70,000 truck with all the whistles... Your old 45 will still be going for many years to come with just a little bit of loving every now and then and as you have shown, when something does go wrong it adds to the adventure.
I spent 12 months on the road with a mate back in 1997 in a 92 rodeo, that was my biggest trip just over 57,000 km's. Since 99 I've lived in Alice Springs so the outback is my backyard and I've been lucky enough to see a lot of it. We always want to go back to the Kimberly, but the next big trip will be the Cape.
My wife and I now have 2 kids, (2.5 and 1) and we plan on taking the camper trailer out over the next winter to some of our favourite local spots, Finke Gorge, Tempe Downs, East MacDonald Ranges, Davenport Ranges, we will see where we end up.

Once again, good luck with the bub and well done with the story, I look forward to hearing about your next adventure...

Crushers, thanks for the reply. I really enjoyed reading it, and it sure made me think. I like your style. Thanks again.

Don, thanks mate. Its really good to receive confirmation of my own beliefs re: taking kids out bush. Ive already got a trip planned for 1 month after the bub is born. Naturally it will be a very basic and simple camping trip close to home and perhaps even for just one or two nights but my wife and i are both very keen to get started asap introducing the little one to the great outdoors. Photo's when it happens are a given so stay tuned :)

Re: Shane Sibert, id strongly recommend if your even in his neck of the woods drop in and say hello, and definitely say hello to him for me (Travis from Australia - with the ol FJ45). As i mentioned earlier, sadly (for me) these days Shane is up there with the most sort after knife makers in the world. His website hasnt changed for at least 5-6years. Generally speaking he does not take orders at all now; but there are always exceptions to this.

Thanks for your story on the Steak knives, they really sound like something special!

Couso, thanks for the kind words. I bet your 12month travels of Australia must have been truly amazing. Some day i really would like to move back to the Territory. I was born in Gove but have not been back there in over 20years. That might very well be perhaps our next 'big' adventure. If you have any old photos from your 1997 12month trip id love to see some of the places you visited and how they looked back then.

Thanks again everyone.

Travis.

One of the places I have always wanted to go
Thanks for the tour
And do you have any animals that won't try to kill you??

Hey guys, a quick one to let you all know Michelle gave birth to our beautiful baby girl, April, tuesday morning. Somewhat unexpected at 20days early but both mum and bub are doing perfectly.

I couldnt be happier.

Congratulations!!!

Your life has forever, and permanently, changed for the better.

I'll guess the event took place in the very early hours of the morning. That seems to be the usual.

My kids were early also, about two weeks is what sticks in my memory. Those kind of details never stay long in my memory. You'll probably face the same kind of memory loss in a few years also. The male memory just doesn't hold onto those kind of details as well as the female memory.

I can already see her sweltering away, fighting the flies, and taking in the magnificent scenery on your next outback journey. :D

Congrats to you both.

She's beautiful! I know it's been said a lot, but congratulations! Funny how you can have so much love for somone so new.

Congrats on the new cruiserhead!!

being a dad is the most amazing thing in the world!

Hey guys,

Very short report here to share a couple of photograph's i took over the long weekend just passed.

With April deciding she wanted to enter the world a little early we were presented with the opportunity to get away camping for the long weekend! April was due on the long weekend but came 3 weeks early, so her first camping trip was age 3 weeks :)

Some friends thought we were dreaming, and it would be crazy. My own parents were quite against us taking her out so soon also but they are not really 'camping people' either.

So, the plan was made and i decided on a little camping area just out of Woods Point. A mate and i took off early Friday to claim a spot then Michelle meet up with some other friends of ours and they drove in together Saturday morning.

Our other friends got a head start on us such that they now have two beautiful little children, 7 months and 20months old. This would be their first camping trip since having their children., with their children.

The weather forecast was quite warm for Melbourne but i expected and hoped it would be slightly cooler where we were going and that it was. Everyday ended up reaching around 27-28 with a gentle cool breeze most of the time.

While it wasnt easy, and Michelle and i ended up going in separate vehicles this was only really necessary because her vehicle isnt setup with dual batteries for the fridge etc. Over the next 12months id hope we might slowly begin to set her new Prado up for going bush.

I slept in my swag beside our tent so Michelle and April had enough room in the tent.

All and all a great first trip away with our little girl. The time flew by a lot quicker then usual and other then going to cut some firewood each afternoon we didnt leave camp and i hardly took any photos which i am disappointed about now but at the time i really didnt feel like i had time to be taking photos lol. But on the bright side, Easter is right around the corner!!!

We have a Bugaboo Chameleon too! Feels weird talking about strollers on a cruiser forum, but what's your impression? Good "offroad"? Our little girl is due in late June.

Stroller tech hijack over. Great pics. Keep them coming please.

Thanks for the update and pics Travis. Great start for the new addition to the outdoors passion. She will grow up knowing how to handle herself well in the great outdoors. My twins are avid campers, and well versed in the outdoors, because of their experiences.

This last September they went backpacking for the first time. They went with friends of theirs to Marion Lake in the Mt Jefferson Wilderness. It was quite an experience for them.

Thanks guys.

Austin, the pram was my wifes choice. She isnt one to spend much money on things in general and is not fussed on 'brands' etc but the Bugaboo was certainly the exception.

Where she even found out about them (Bugaboo) i have no idea but lets just say i was instructed that the Bugaboo was it, that was what she wanted.

Honestly i love it and hate it. The underneath storage area is good for nothing, way to small and a pain to access (But this might change when the top thing is turned around for forward facing & upright sitting). Around town it 'handles' very well but off road, its no 40 Series Landcruiser thats for sure!

Perhaps currently im still 'babying' it with our little girl inside, (pushing it very carefully and gently) so the wheels tended to get hung up on the larger rocks around camp.

As you can see in some of the photos, i did even 'reverse' the pram so the larger wheels were at the front (off road mode) but it didnt seem to help much on the large river rocks and i found myself constantly lifting the pram up.

Im sure i must get some funny looks around town here when i drive up to the shops with April, and the bugaboo hanging out the back of the old Landcruiser ute lol.

When our two were Aprils' age we had a side by side stroller that was given to us. It was awkward in store aisles, etc, because of the extra width. The interior was capable of laying flat just like their cribs at home, so it sure made a great "bed" for them when camping. It's amazing how much the pile of camping gear grows when the family grows. Before kids we had an old two wheel drive 73 Subaru station wagon (the poor mans offroad vehicle, it was amazing where we could go with it) that was the perfect size for all our camping gear, and our small dog, and still left me room to be able to see out back with the interior rear view mirror. With kids we ended up having to get a bigger car, and pull a small trailer to be able to carry all the needs.

Initially we had front packs (for lack of better description) that we used a lot that first summer. The front pack kept them close to our body, keeping them from doing a lot of unwanted "flopping" around. The front packs were much easier to navigate with than with the stroller when the paths were not so smooth. Then we graduated to back packs when they were a little older. But I found the back packs awkward when I was trying to take photos. My style of photography was often down on my hands and knees taking close-ups/macro of wild flowers. I would be just about ready to push the shutter button for that perfect photo, and which ever one I had in my pack would wiggle because they didn't like to be kept on their back very long.

Keep posting!! I'm interested in how things go for the three of you, especially when camping or spending time in the outdoors.

Don
