One day we'll have to do a Simpson or Alice run and all meet in the middle for a beer.

Does it seem we are all in the top end 60's group here?

12 hours down the Tanami and I'm in Alice Springs, the Tanami starts in Halls Creek, so call the day and I'll be there :p

I'm trying to place those Sydney location shots but it's got me stuffed!
I'm between Sutherland and Wollongong so Illawarra and sthn highlands is my stomping ground.

This is my fourth 60 series... Had a 1981 4 speed, then an 85 auto (slug) an HJ61 that been retrofitted with a 24V motor into a twelve volt car and came with all sorts of complications and then I found this one in Canberra about 9 months ago.

It was a one owner with log books, 275K when I bought it (301 now...), no rust anywhere... no really... It serves as work car, play car and holiday travel vehicle so it had to be both economical and reliable and it has been a winner.

It came pretty original with very few extras so Gumtree has been helping me slowly get it up to speed. So far I've installed a brake controller for the van, a reversing camera (great when you tow every day), a UHF, some extra 12v outlets, HIDs, after market stereo, andersen plug and the big winner for me was the cup holders. The old HJs didn't come with anywhere to put your drinks and there is no logical spot to make it happen.

After some pondering I made a set of cup holders out of some stormwater elbows and some steel brackets lying around my shed. I attached it to the seatbelt bolt on the drivers side and now there are two cupholders alongside the drivers seat in the gap that work a treat.

We did a trip to Karajini a couple of weeks back and for that I added some roof racks (taken off for around town) and a new set of Kuhmos. It also got a new radiator which lost 5l due to a leak... Fortunately we discovered it in time otherwise it could have been very ugly.

So far I've been wrapped with its performance both around town and towing. I'm getting 12l/100 regularly and got 14 while towing on the recent trip. I sold a 2007 Patrol to get this beast and that was getting 15 and 19 - hard to believe a car this age could be so economical.

The down sides are that the rear air con doesn't work (fridge does) but I'm reluctant to get it fixed as the front does the job nicely. There some weepy oil leaks - not worth big $$ and the swivel hubs need doing.

Anyway - that's my contribution. I love seeing all the old 60's. I realise not everyone sees them as a thing of beauty, but for those of us who do this is awesome

Good write up Andrew. It's a shame the sahara didn't come with cup holders but in other news the GXL and I'm guessing the GX came with cup holders in exactly the same position you built yours into just mounted to the (non refrigerated) centre console.

I think the loss of the cup holders was more to do with not penetrating the "refrigerated" centre console.

I didn't think the early 60's had cup holders at all?

Either way the fridge is a nice novelty, but actually functions as a storage unit / centre console for all that crap that won't fit anywhere else!

Yeah I think you're right, it may have been a GX introduction.
