Ok,

Who has experience with running a Auburn LSD (Limited Slip differential) in either the front or rear of their FJ60 or 62?

Good....bad... what's your opinion? I'm not a hardcore rock crusher and I suspect as long as I own the truck I will not be "hitting the rocks".

I will be using the truck off-road on trails, logging roads, forest roads, mud, snow when and if I encouter it. Don't see much snow in AL.

It appears to me that the Auburn units are the only limited slip differential avaliable for the FJ60.

I have a powertraxx locker in the rear and it works fine. I'm interesting in installing a Auburn LSD in the front axle. (at the present its just an open differential). I might consider removing the rear locker too and installing an Auburn there too. The locking and unlocking of the locker is gettling a little old. Maybe I'm not "hard core" but anyone care to share their experience with and Auburn LSD in the front axle or rear axle or even both?

Thanks..

I have a Auburn unit in the front of my 62. It works great. Seems to be great in the mud or snow. 35,000 miles later and no problems.

But the downside is that it channels alot when you lock the hubs. It pulls left and right and is just a little unruly when the hubs are locked in, even if the 4 wheel is not engaged. It is not unmanageable if you pay attention to driving, but I would not want to let someone behind the wheel with out properly explaining what is goung to do. Ah heck I don't like anyone behind the wheel of my cruiser, so I guess that is not a point.

auburn lsd

I have run an auburn in my fj60 sprung over. It worked great in the front. It allowed much better steering than with a mechanical locker. It still hooked up both tires in most situations. We carry these, but we also have the clutch style Japanese LSD units in stock. These work awesome, but can only be used in front ends or full float rear end (no spot for c-clips).

Ive got a geared limited slip in the front of mine which i prefer over the cone or clutch setups. It does a good job of getting me where i need to go. I can make it lock up by fiddling with the brakes when need be, and i can still turn tight in 4wd when i need to. A locker wouldnt be any harder on parts, in fact i think foot braking it to get the power transferring might actually be harder on the joints.

I had an Auburn in the front of my BJ60 and then BJ70. With 31s it was like a locker, with 35s it was more like open. Their biggest downfall is the price. There is not much difference between an auburn and an arb. Tough and reliable though and way less broken birfs.

i had an auburn in the rear of a hilux.
i liked it. it lived it's whole life between 33x12.50's, 100K miles later and it still would drag the inside tire around street corners on hot days.

Ok,

I appreciate the comments. Maybe some others will add to this. I have an Eaton LSD in my GM pickup and it does a great job in the rear axle. To bad eaton does not offer products for the FJ60. I think the Auburn is bouncing around $500 and the ARB locker by itself is over $700, plus another $250 or so for the compressor. I'm of the opinon that I want the drivetrain to be "pure mechanical" in that when I engage 4 wheel drive I just want it to work. I just can't see putting a locker in the front axle.

As I've related I don't think I'll see any real rock climbing in what I use this thing for, if any, it would be something on the trivial side in regard to "rocks". That being said it would appear that a LSD is the correct solution.

I think the biggest tire I would probally run on my truck is 285/75/R16 which I believe is close to a 33. Right now its stock with close to stock tire size.

For the most part, the difference between a locker and an lsd is minimal until a tire comes off the ground or one tire has a lot more traction than the other. If you arent going to hit the rocks, then im sure it would do you fine.

How about this, you buy me an aussie locker and ill send you my torsen. Thats your cheapest option :grinpimp:.
