Jon, you just didn't seem the type...

I'm not. But in light of recent events I've given it lots of thought. Fortunately, the events have been limited to outside only. I'm not aware of any home break-ins in the neighborhood.

Marc,

Glad everyone is alright; at least physically anyway.

I'd say get a dog but but you folks may not be dog lovers or have the time and resource to raise a puppy. Some people who get dogs for guard duty usually end up having dogs that aren't well trained, nuisance barkers and generally a PITA. Dogs are similar to kids - they need proper attention, training and a good upbringing to be a good dog.

I like the idea of a gun but life gets much worse after the trigger is pulled (very litigious society we have these days).

Not sure what the answer is....

Again, glad everyone is alright.

That's the main reason we haven't gotten one. I barely have enough energy and time to devote to my kids. Throwing a dog in the mix would only make things more complicated. I also don't feel like I have a big enough yard for a larger dog and I think small dogs are more worthless than cats. At least cats don't have incessant annoying barking habits like rat-dogs.

Rat-dogs can hide under furniture though, giving one more time to load up (if needed).

Home Defense

12 ga., or 20 ga., pump. Mossberg made a short- barreled .410 aimed at women buyers a few years ago. Remington 870 pumps are > $200 at most large sporting goods stores-
#4 buck (shot) has about , I dunno, maybe 30 or so pellets, all .22 cal in size. Bird shot won't penetrate walls and threaten family members- 12 ga. slugs will reliably penetrate a car door,
00 buck is good, too- be cognizant of overpenetration , i.e. walls, interior doors, etc.
BUT, IF- you choose to arm yourself, you NEED to familiarize yourself with the law and the legal concept of jeopardy-
can't use deadly force to protect property, just people- and you need to be able to articulate this.
Can't shoot a scumbag outside, 'cept in Tex-*ss, which has an archaic law that you can use deadly force to protect property-
and, laws vary from state- to state, so read up,.............
if you tak ea concealed carry course, they will get you up to speed on the LAW- at least as important as the decision to use deadly force/

my .02 from 20 + years in de bidness-

Sage advice David, and well said.

x2! 2 acres & 1-5 doberdogs (depending on who's visiting) works for me, but I'm not raising 2 leggeds.

If you are considering a gub, don't forget about child safety locks. Might have some from a give-away that I could send your way.

Large dog & small yard works as long as you interact: walks, training, etc. Raised my first dober in a loft...

FWIW there's a lot of stuff on the market in the east mountains lately. 30 min from Tramway & Central, $180k & up...

Time is not something my wife or I have any spare. A 4 and a 5-year old consume most of it. Then there's school that I fit in between work and family. I'm don't want to get a dog that won't get the attention it needs.

I'd love to move to the east mountains but my wife says "no way". She's afraid she'll feel isolated and not have the conveniences of city life that she's accustomed to. I could live near Sedillo Hill and probably still be closer to work (KAFB) than I am now(near Cottonwood Mall).

i have an unloaded 12g pump that sits in my closet. Jill knows how to rack it. that's all she needs when i'm not home. no worries about use of deadly force. if it's taken away, it can't be used on her or kids. shells are no where near it, so kids can't harm themselves even if they somehow could get to it.

with the sound of the pump, anybody that don't belong in the house is gettin' out anyway. just an example of Dan's point.

My 12ga. has bolt action. It doesn't quite make the good sound of a pump action.

Bolt action= OK, too. I think it is that goo d'ole metallic sound that gets 'em going.

Away.

robbery

If you are puming the action or doing whatever you need to do to make your weapon functional you are late to the gunfight. All weapons should be ready to fire when taken off safe or best not put on safe. Your finger is your safety. Of course if there are children and others about then safe is good. Just my 2cents after packing a gun for the past 24 years everyday as well as living in a terrorist/civil war torn country for six years.
