Danise came home today to discover someone in our house. She arrived home about 5 minutes after the alarm was triggered, according to the event log. As she started to turn off the alarm, she noticed a shadow and motion on the 2nd floor landing above the alarm control panel. She grabbed the kids and ran out of the house. When the police showed up, they noted the front door, back door and balcony door were all open. All the windows were closed and locked. Nothing appears to be missing. Nobody is physically hurt but the emotional damage is pretty bad. My guess is the criminal(s?) came in through an unlocked door (I frequently find unlocked doors when I come home from work and nobody else is home) because there aren't any signs of forced entry. They probably figured they had enough time to grab some valuables with the alarm blaring and be gone before anyone ever showed up.

Do we have to lock down our house like a fortress with bars or roll-up security doors to have any sense of security anymore? Maybe this will convince Danise to let us buy a house with a big enough lot to surround the house with a fence and get a couple good guard dogs to deter most thieves.

Yes.

An acre and 5-6 Brittanys seems to work fairly well.

Probably not a good idea to enter the house with the alarm sounding.

Crime is almost off the radar in Corrales. Marc, even if Corrales is not your cup of tea, there have to be other similar neighborhoods around that afford the security we enjoy.

I like Corrales but the property prices have gotten too far out of my level of affordability. What does an acre cost out these days? The other problem is how far it is form where I work. If I could find something affordable it would probably be in the NW side of the village basically in Rio Rancho. That would increase my commute time from 45 minutes to over an hour.

When the alarm triggers, the sirens (1 inside and 1 outside) go for 2 minutes. Then they shut off. They will then cycle on and off about every 10 minutes. She came home in between one of the siren cycles so the only sound she heard was the beeping from the control panel that alerts you to a problem, but you can only hear it once you come in the house. We've had a few false alarms so she thought it was just another false alarm until she noticed the shadow. The primary purpose for the alarm is to alert us to an intruder when we are home. A secondary purpose is as a deterrent to thieves. Obviously, it's not enough of a deterrent.

More than one house right around us has been hit in the recent past. The ones with fences, gates and dogs (like the two HUGE Danes accross the street) have been left alone.

Dog = Good.
2 or more big barking dogs that appear ferocious = Very good.

sorry to hear that Marc, I am glad the crew is ok though. If you need to borrow my gaurd dogs for now let me know. Just be careful because Beagles are known as an aggressive breed and it is common to find dead and dismembered socks in your yard.

but seriuosly, I'm glad that nothing worse had happened.

Thanks for the offer for Frank and Beans.

That must be a horrible sight to see the sock mutilations. I can imagine there must be a lot of disembowled stuffed toys laying around as well.

This kind of thing was my biggest fear when I moved back here. I never owned a gun my whole life until I moved back. 2 months after being home I bought and keep 16 rounds of hollowpoints, cocked and locked, in a safe at the bedside.

We (my wife and I) got a year membership at Calibers and I go at least once every 2 weeks if not more. I know a shotgun would be best, but my wife was not comfortable with it. I'm happy if she's happy sending 9mm's downstream.

We also own two labs who are very noisy when things aren't right. If some joker is willing to ignore the dogs he best be prepared to get killed.

No I won't be using any of my "skills" to help him either. I'll call 911 and get the girls out of the house to a neighbors.

Get a pump gun.

One of the most sinister sounds on the planet is a pumper racking a load of OO buck.

Agreed.

My brother in law has an arsenal. His pump shotgun sends chills down my spine even when I'm the one operating it. His AR-15 is smooth as silk but the pump gets the job done in a hurry with no questions asked.

Now, for my 130lb wife to send 12 gauge OO at a bad guy she best be ready to accept the bruise on her shoulder. She was not. I don't think she was keen on a safe that could hold the shottie anyway. The smaller and inconspicuous the better.

Still...the most dangerous weapon you can have is the one you are comfortable with and not worried about shooting.

I'd prefer a short barrel 20g autoloader. Easier to handle when you only need to shoot at most 30 feet in the house.

You are missing the whole point Jon.

The sound of the pump racking the round often makes the perp s*** his pants.....;)

.38 works just fine as long as you have gun control* on your side.

*That means you can shoot what you're aiming at.

Marc,

I'm so sorry to hear happened. I'm glad everyone is safe. If you want to borrow Zoe let me know. She may not be very ferocious, but I'm sure she is a pretty good deterent none the less. I'm still around for a few more weeks if I can do anything to help you guys out.

I understand. But I think the first unexpected blast in the pants would do the same thing. :grinpimp:
