I have decided on the portal-tek axles for my FJ40, but not on the replacement of my T/C. With the new axles I obviously could go with an Orion or an Atlas.

I'm not asking for much:rolleyes:, I want something for rock crawling, mudding, desert running and street use ;p

Any opinion on best set-up and gearing ?

The whole thing is running behind a V8 and an ranger overdrive and the final ration of the axles can be betwenn 3 and 7.2.

I'd look at a STAK transfer case.

i was going to go with a stak before i desided i was going four wheel steer with the portals and needed dual offset

Stak or Atlas....

Orion's are a great improvement over a stock Land Cruiser one-piece transfer case...but they are not even in the same league as the Stak or Atlas...

Won't the Portal Tech axles have a centered rear? GO with an Altas or Stak.

As for gearing? Auto or stick?
if they are like volvos then the rears are slightly offset which will allow a cruiser tcase or atlas stak etc

 Got an SM420 manual

Ok so it now Stak vs Atlas, regardless I can specify a center rear diff from Portal-Tek :)

Th SM420 is a tough SOB, but it is hard to shift and the ratio separation on the gears are spread way apart.

Since you are going with a new Atlas/Stak and can go very deep in the axles, you need to decide what your goal is for overall gearing.

If you do a STAK, then the 3 speed case would be nice, that way you won't be in stupid low all the time.

Atlas has a 4 speed case coming out, it will be nice, I just don't know the delivery time on that.

With a three speed tcase I would never do a SM420.

They are a good tranny but I would MUCH rather have a quick shifting 4 speed or 5 speed than the 420..

How much city driving you planning on doing?

Sorry for this dumb question. What is STAK?
Where can i get more info about that?

Well it would be primarely a off road rig.
The street driving would mostly be going to and fro the dirt.

Having driven the 420, I know it not the speediest of shifters, by far.

I did consider changing it (hell everything else is new), what would you use instead?

Man, I LOVE the 4 speed Cruiser tranny (edit). Find a good AA 350/Toyota adapter and ditch the Ranger.

Get the Stak 3 speed case and go as high as you can in the diffs. This will be an issue with the portals. You will have GOBS of gear there to deal with.

Main thing to me is not getting to low that you cannot get your tires spinning good.

That is the advantage of the 3sp case. Keep it around 65:1 with the tranny, Portals and the first case and then dump it nice and low with the second case.

I wish I still had that ability with my setup.

The SM is kinda built into my rig now..

I REALLY want a quicker tranny for shifting. My rig hates the sand :(

Yeah, but that would be a headache to install in my 40 right now.
